The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is one of the finest museums on the West coast and is celebrated for the superb quality of its permanent collection. Its mission is to integrate art into the lives of people through internationally recognized exhibitions, special programs, as well as the thoughtful presentation of its permanent collection.

The Museum is currently seeking the ideal candidate for a full-time, Curatorial Assistant in support of Museum’s programs in Asian Art, under the supervision of the Elizabeth Atkins Curator of Asian Art. This is an excellent opportunity for advanced graduate students in the area of one or more aspects of Asian art who wish to pursue a curatorial career, as it offers firsthand experience in nearly all aspects of the art museum.

Responsibilities

This position’s primary responsibility will be in support of the curatorial activities overseen by the Elizabeth Atkins Curator of Asian art relating to a wide range of Asian cultures—China, Japan, Korea, India, SE Asia and Himalayas. The duties include administrative and clerical support, object documentation and research, exhibitions from conception to planning and implementation, publications and acquisitions. Other responsibilities include working with other departments such as Registration, Education, and Communications on Asian art projects and related programs and events. Participation in donor cultivation and specialist consultation may also be assigned.

Schedule: Full Time - 40 hours/week.

Full Time status is eligible for all benefits including PTO, holiday pay, medical, dental, vision, LTD, Life, Pre-tax plans, and 403b.

Requirements

Qualified candidates will have an advanced degree in art history with demonstrated research and writing capabilities (MA, ABD, PhD). Some museum experience are preferred. Reading fluency in an East Asian language is essential, preferably Chinese or Japanese. Excellent organizational skills, a strong ability to multi-task, proficiency with MS Office, and excellent written communication skills are required. Knowledge of TMS software and basic graphic design skills are preferred. Sociability and working well across departments and with museum patrons and consultants are also a must, as is a can-do attitude and strong work ethic.
