The Exhibit Designer participates in the development of visitor experiences and leads the design process. This position develops design strategies; visualizes exhibition elements and environments; determines materials, finishes, audio and video elements; creates drawing details for comprehensive construction/fabrication documentation. The Exhibit Designer participates in collaborative work sessions, product research, estimating, scheduling and project management in support of the exhibition division’s goals and work plan.

Responsibilities
  • Develop design strategies that support project goals and specified outcomes

  • Visualize designs through sketches, illustrations, renderings, physical or digital 3D models

  • Specify materials, finishes, products and processes for design elements

  • Develop interactive experiences that engage visitors and meet universal design criteria for inclusion and accessibility

  • Communicate design intent to cross functional teams and present project progress to outside groups

  • Develop phase deliverable documentation and presentations for projects.

  • Create detailed design drawings and thorough construction documentation using CAD software

  • Organize work, prioritize tasks and schedule time to meet project deadlines

  • Work with outside consultants and vendors ensuring criteria and quality standards are met

  • Participates in and contributes to an enthusiastic, collaborative and diverse creative culture

  • Serves as project manager on assigned projects, creating and managing project schedules, budgets, plans and leading project teams to ensure success criteria are met on time and on budget

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degrees in art, architecture, industrial design, museum studios or related field; or equivalent experience

  • Four years of experience and demonstrated skills in design methods and details of fabrication for a variety of exhibit related products including cabinetry, interactives, multimedia systems, and building infrastructure.

  • Demonstrated literacy in modern CAD software and knowledge of drafting standards

  • Demonstrated knowledge of image editing, vector design, and page layout software

  • Proven ability to conceptualize designs, develop exhibit components, detail design direction and create construction documentation

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Fluent in Microsoft office applications

  • Hard working, collaborative, creative, enthusiastic disposition

Desired Skills

  • Multi-lingual

  • Knowledge of zoo and/or aquarium life support, plumbing and lighting systems took ensure high quality of animal care
