Under the direction of the Head of the European Art Department, the Assistant/Associate Curator of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts will oversee, in collaboration with the Senior Curator of the European Art Department and Walter B. Ford II Family Curator of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, the permanent collection of over 7,000 objects of European sculpture and decorative arts until 1850. The DIA’s collection is among the best in the world and reflects the accomplishments achieved in sculpture, ceramics, furniture, metalwork, glass, armor, tapestries, and textiles by some of Europe’s most accomplished artists and artisans.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, researching and cataloguing objects in the DIA’s permanent collection, organizing loan exhibitions, overseeing permanent gallery installations, recommending art works for acquisition, and supporting the work of the DIA’s auxiliary groups.

Responsibilities
  • Assists the department head and senior curator in day-to-day operations of the European Art Department;

  • Maintains and updates physical and digital departmental records in accordance with the DIA’s archival and data standards;

  • Researches and documents European sculpture and decorative arts objects, including provenance and archival research;

  • Fields and responds to inquiries about the collection from scholars and the general public;

  • Collaborates with the department head and senior curator to propose significant acquisitions;

  • Collaborates with museum conservators and registrars to care for the European sculpture and decorative arts permanent collection and objects on long-term loan;

  • Assists with loan requests and deaccessions as assigned;

  • Supports the conception, research, and execution of exhibitions;

  • Prepares general and scholarly publications on the collection;

  • Partners effectively with the division of Learning and Audience Engagement in developing didactic materials for the permanent galleries as well as the training of gallery teachers and Interpretive Program Volunteers (IPVs);

  • Supports the development department’s efforts to cultivate existing and prospective patrons of the European Art Department;

  • Participates in public programs as assigned;

  • Travels, on occasion, as a museum courier;

  • Other related duties as assigned

Requirements

An M.A. degree in art history or related field from an accredited college or university required. Specialization in one or more of these areas of European sculpture and decorative arts is desirable: medieval works of art, northern European sculpture, arms and armor, and/or tapestries and textiles. A Ph.D. in art history or related field preferred. A minimum of five years of working experience in a museum or related institution preferred for the position of Associate Curator and a minimum of two or three years of experience in a museum or related institution preferred for the position of Assistant Curator. Additional years of experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong record of research and scholarship

  • Proven experience in organizing exhibitions at the Associate Curator level;

  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail;

  • Reading knowledge of at least one European language preferred;

  • Previous experience with object-based, archival, and provenance research required;

  • Must be proficient in latest version of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Power Point, Outlook, Excel, SharePoint and Office 365;

  • Some experience with The Museum System (TMS) database preferred;

  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and willingness to collaborate with colleagues, museum patrons and supporters, and the public;

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed;

  • Must have the ability to work well under pressure, handle multiple priorities/projects, and meet deadlines;

  • Must have the ability to work independently;

  • Must possess sound judgment, exercise professional conduct, understand and follow ethics and standards, and maintain a high level of confidentiality in all duties;

  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork;
