The Deputy Director occupies a critical organizational leadership position at the museum, working closely with the director to oversee the administrative operations and day-to-day management of the museum, promoting a highly functional, interactive, and dynamic museum team. This includes direct supervision of the departments of exhibitions planning and implementation, collections care and registration, external relations, digital infrastructure, operations, and collaboration on human resources work. To continuously identify and address policies, processes, and procedures that improve the museum’s performance, operations, and reception.
Exhibitions
Oversees the work of the Head of Exhibitions in exhibitions planning and implementation.
Is responsible for negotiating and executing all exhibition contracts.
Researches grant opportunities, oversees grant proposal process, ensures implementation of proposed work, and facilitates reporting for all awarded grants.
Collections
Oversees the work of the Registrar on collections management.
Oversees the work of the Associate Curator of Collections regarding collections care and research.
Operations
Oversees the work of the Associate Director for External Relations and Operations on visitor services, security, publications, and communications.
Oversees the work of the Assistant Director, Digital Platforms, Media, and Archives on the museum’s digital infrastructure.
Administration
Assists with human resources along with the Associate Director for Finance and Administration
Assists Director and other Director’s Reports with Policy and Implementation
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Master’s degree in art history, anthropology, or the equivalent.
Seven years of progressive management experience in art and/or higher education organizations.
Working knowledge of museum management principles and practices.
Supervisory experience, including collaborative work.
Strong leadership and organizational skills.
Track record of organizing exhibitions.
Proven ability to forge mutually respectful and effective relationships with a diverse staff.
Outstanding oral and written skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in art history, anthropology, education, or the equivalent.
Ten years of progressive museum management experience within higher education.
Track record of curating exhibitions and/or publishing and presenting within the museum field.
Knowledge of art, together with demonstrated commitment to education.
