The Digital Media Technical Assistant will be responsible for providing technical and project-related maintenance and support for the museum’s digital outlets and applications. This position performs maintenance and trouble-shooting of the in-gallery interactives, in-museum digital signage, museum applications and web platforms, as well as the associated databases for the permanent collection. The Digital Media Technical Assistant acts as a liaison with and among AWM departments, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh’s centralized IT department, and various platform vendors to ensure that the systems function efficiently and effectively and are coordinated with CMP’s digital projects. Additionally, this position edits digital content and assists content editors across museum departments.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

MAINTAIN AND MANAGE IN-MUSEUM DIGITAL SIGNAGE, players, as well as in-gallery interactive projects, usually in conjunction with special exhibitions.

PROVIDE APPLICATION SUPPORT. Provides application support, troubleshooting, and responds to user inquiries for the collections management database (TMS), its component Conservation Studio, and the digital asset management system (NetX), Wordpress, and custom applications.

COLLABORATE WITH COLLECTIONS/EXHIBITIONS. Provides technical support for collection management databases.

LIAISON BETWEEN IT AND VENDORS. Serves as a liaison with CMP’s central IT department and with the digital platform (TMS, Conservation Studio, NetX, Wordpress Host, App Stores) vendors regarding the museum’s needs, including software updates. Oversees platform maintenance tasks. Works in tandem with the IT department to ensure that efforts are coordinated with IT’s overall efforts.

MANAGES CUSTOMER NEEDS. Serves as the liaison with other AWM departments on issues and projects relating to the use of the digital platforms. Assesses users’ needs, determines priorities with input from the Director of Digital Engagement and others as needed, and communicates with users regarding priorities and progress.

WORKS TOWARD EXPANDED ACCESS. Collaborates with internal users to ensure an effective interface with the digital platforms to make collections information available to external audiences across various platforms. Contribute to the development and/or implementation of an API. In collaboration with COLLECTIONS, develop a plan for providing online access to the museum’s collection records. Assists with preparation of data for public access.

STAYS CURRENT. Keeps up-to-date on best practices in web development and database administration. Maintains beneficial relationships with peers in comparable institutions. Participates in professional development opportunities.

Undertakes other projects at the direction of the director of digital engagement.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: The position requires a bachelor’s degree, excellent computer skills, and at least two years of experience with database-driven web applications, digital asset management systems; specific knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Wordpress,TMS, and NetX is highly desirable. Working knowledge of data architectures and metadata standards, particularly SQL and XML, and object-oriented programming languages is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: The Digital Media Technical Assistant must have strong planning and organizational skills; be a good problem-solver; and have the ability to communicate with and resolve competing demands from multiple constituents. Accuracy and attention to detail is essential. Should be equally adept at working independently and in a team-oriented environment, including maintaining collegial relationships with individuals from different backgrounds and levels of expertise. Proficiency with adobe creative suite is desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is primarily sedentary in nature and requires extensive use of computer work to review and edit data.
