Reporting directly to the Executive Director & Chief Curator at The Kitchen and dotted line managing both the Institutional Advancement & Special Projects Manager and a forthcoming grant writer position, this role will be essential to The Kitchen’s fundraising initiatives and steward Development at The Kitchen in expanding and amplifying its fundraising capacity in this pivotal moment of the institution’s growth and change. As The Kitchen prepares for a significant renovation of its 19th Street building on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the Director of Development, in collaboration with The Kitchen’s Board of Trustees, Executive Leadership, and senior management, will be responsible for strategically shaping a fundraising strategy that holistically integrates the identification and successful cultivation of individual, foundation, government, and corporate support; expanding select channels; and acting as a core participant and leader in the planning and execution of The Kitchen’s annual fundraising benefit. In this next chapter of The Kitchen’s growth prospect development will be a focal point, alongside advancing and securing major gifts from new sources reflective of the organization’s mission and values.

A core contributor to senior management team, the Director of Development will enhance The Kitchen’s financial bottom line in support of the institution’s experimental and dynamic creative program, establishing a stable pathway forward for the long-term financial health of the organization. The Director will be a close collaborator and support to the Director of Finance on all budgets and cash flow and liaise across departments to support staff in doing the same. Additionally, the role will be responsible for communication with the Board of Trustees on behalf of the Executive Director & Chief Curator.

The position requires a candidate equipped to think broadly and innovatively about The Kitchen’s artist-centered mission in going between organizational leadership, the Board of Trustees, patrons, artists, and external vendors and consultants. Must be comfortable working in a collaborative, experimental, and culturally diverse setting and possess the openness, flexibility, and diplomacy required for meaningful collaboration with contemporary artists. Innovative and outstanding communication, writing, and research abilities are celebrated.

  • Develop and action a streamlined, strategic, comprehensive fundraising plan that details a clear roadmap toward effective results and answers to short- mid- and long-term financial goals of the organization.

  • Transform major gift initiatives by identifying, cultivating, and securing gifts from a broad range of donors, foundations, and corporations.

  • Lead relationships with the foundation, government, and corporate partners.

  • Steward the preparation and submission of all grant proposals and reports to foundations, corporations, government agencies to advance for the annual operating budget and in intersectional engagement of the ongoing capital campaign.

  • Support the Executive Director & Chief Curator’s relationship with the Board of Trustees to grow their participation through “give and get”.

  • Set annual giving goals and solicitation plans for the Board, inclusive of corporate and other types of support.

  • In collaboration with the Institutional Advancement & Special Projects Manager, steward the activities and meetings of Board Committees; schedule meetings and prepare all materials.

  • Schedule quarterly Board meetings and prepare all presentation materials and follow-ups for quarterly Board meetings.

  • Lead research for fundraising, identifying prospects, growing new donor profiles, and amplifying successful donor interactions locally, nationally, and internationally.

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director & Chief Curator, Manager of Institutional Advancement & Special Projects, and engaging across departments as needed, plan and successfully execute 1-2 annual fundraising benefits, inclusive of The Kitchen’s Gala, guaranteeing income goals are met.

  • Collaborate with Institutional Advancement & Special Project Manager regarding any campaigns specific to The Kitchen’s Limited Edition Program and management of income reporting therein.

  • Collaborate with the Capital Campaign Director to advance campaign fundraising goals.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Finance to manage the departmental budget and cash flow projections to ensure deadlines are clearly communicated across the department and goals are met.

  • Drive communication and correspondence including institutional reports, proposals, cultivation materials, processing and acknowledgment of gifts to patrons, etc.

  • Facilitation with the team the writing of acknowledgment letters and overseeing the maintenance of the grants calendar, AudienceView records, and donor files.

  • Represent The Kitchen and its best interests with core constituents and partners (e.g. major donors, foundation and government contacts, patrons, the Board of Trustees, prospective Board members, etc.)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent research, writing, and organizational skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop or related software.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Knowledge and interest in rising and diverse artists.

  • Knowledge of contemporary fundraising principles, strategies, techniques, best practices, and ethics.

  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and research skills.

  • Proven success with developing and executing short and long-term fundraising strategies, including donor cultivation and management.

  • Strong track record of building Trustee relationships and creating a culture of philanthropy within the organization.

  • Experience developing and managing budgets of up to $3M required.

  • Ability to organize and analyze data and present it to Director, Trustees, staff, and stakeholders clearly and concisely.

  • Available to work or attend evening, weekend, or off-hour cultivation events; travel occasionally as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; dance degree desirable.

  • 5-7 years of proven track record in fundraising demonstrating increasing leadership and responsibility, preferably within a nonprofit cultural organization with an annual operating budget of at least $3M.

  • Experience or familiarity with a Capital Campaign is a plus, but not a requirement for the role.

Starting salary is $100,000. This is a full-time position at 40 hours/week and includes medical, vision, and dental insurance and paid time off. The position is exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Salary commensurate with experience, skills, and knowledge.
