The Jewish Museum:

Founded in 1904 and located on New York City’s Museum Mile, the Jewish Museum is a museum at the intersection of art and Jewish culture for people of all backgrounds. The Museum maintains a unique collection of nearly 30,000 works of art, ceremonial objects, and media reflecting the global Jewish experience over more than 4,000 years. The Museum applies a contemporary lens to its exhibitions, which range from ancient to contemporary art.

The Position:

The Jewish Museum seeks a highly experienced Director of Facilities, Security & Engineering to oversee all matters related to its historic mansion and related facilities. The Director serves as a key member of the senior leadership team and ensures a well maintained, safe and securely run physical plant, supportive of Museum gallery activities, public programs and administrative operations.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the Building Operations department, which includes the security staff, engineers, porters, carpenter(s), and A/V specialists; supervise, mentor and support the Operations Manager and Security Manager.

  • Oversee all short-term and long-range capital planning efforts, based on Museum goals.

  • Collaborate with the Program Administration and Curatorial staff on exhibitions and curatorial projects; review design plans and construction schedules and advise on structural issues that may come into play.

  • Plan and provide strategic leadership for capital improvements from concept to completion, including defining the project scope and timelines, selecting and negotiating with vendors, and communicating any financial/ business continuity considerations.

  • Provide technical leadership and maintain strong vendor relationships in order to effectively and efficiently resolve physical plant and technical equipment issues.

  • Ensure HVAC equipment operates efficiently in order to maintain proper temperature and humidity levels in the galleries and art storage rooms.

  • Monitor the general maintenance of all mechanical systems, life safety systems, fire prevention systems and building facades and roofs.

  • Review and authorize all operational department budgets, including salary budgets for the custodial, engineering and security staff. Identify ways to reduce costs while maintaining the highest standards of operation.

  • Ensure that all facilities-related work and equipment is in compliance with regulatory and government codes (City, State, Federal) and applicable environmental safety standards; ensure that all permits and licenses are kept up to date and resolve city violations and complaints.

  • Lead the Museum’s sustainability efforts; implement measures to reduce energy use and waste, ensuring Museum operations are as green and sustainable as possible.

  • Work closely with the Security Manager to develop and maintain security and fire protection protocols that reflect current standards and Museum best practices, including evacuation plans, security operation manuals, accident and incident reports, fire and natural disaster plans, and related materials.

  • Conduct regular inspections and surveys of the building, interior and exterior with the Security Manager to identify security, alarm, fire protection and other safety concerns and recommend corrective action.

  • Stay abreast of current events and potential threats that may impact the Museum; communicate with senior management and makes appropriate mitigation plans as needed.

  • Network with Museum facility administrators at other cultural institutions; participate in professional organizations relevant to the field.

  • Promote an environment that encourages cooperation, collaboration, professional development and creativity.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to Facility Management such as Mechanical Engineering or Architecture.

  • 10+ years of relevant experience; prior experience in a museum setting highly preferred.

  • A thoughtful and respectful manager, who understands how to motivate, train and leverage the staff.

  • Proven experience operating complex mechanical equipment, including working knowledge of chillers, boilers, cooling towers and automated building management systems.

  • Knowledge of basic historic preservation and cultural property best practices; experience with Landmarked buildings preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of New York City building code and accessibility guidelines.

  • Strong organizational ability, analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Must be reachable and responsive during non-working hours to address security issues relating to the Museum, should they arise.
