Hauser & Wirth is looking for a Director of Operations for its Los Angeles Gallery. This full- time position oversees operational activities and environmental, health and safety protocols in compliance with local, state and federal environmental standards.

Hauser & Wirth is one of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries with offices in Zurich, Gstaad, London, Somerset, New York and Los Angeles. Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles, located in a historic 100,000 square foot flour mill complex in the city’s burgeoning downtown Arts District, opened to the public in March 2016. The gallery transformed the site’s sprawling collection of late 19th and early 20th century buildings and outdoor spaces into a dynamic multi-disciplinary arts center. The new venue offers innovative exhibitions, museum-caliber amenities, and a robust schedule of public programs that contextualize the art on view, drawing upon, illuminating, and contributing to the urban culture of Los Angeles.

Responsibilities

Operations

  • Responsible for the daily operations of the gallery in close collaboration with senior management.

  • Review, analyze, and evaluate business operations procedures.

  • In collaboration with senior management, oversee exhibition programming, purchasing, and exhibition labor needs.

  • Plan, direct, control, implement, evaluate, monitor, and forecast budgets and costs to achieve the Gallery’s financial objectives.

  • Communicate and explain new directives, policies, or procedures to managers and staff while maintaining morale.

  • Lead coordination and integration of efforts among operations, and the Front Desk team, to produce smooth workflows and cost-effective business processes.

  • Serve as the Operational leader in site audits and determining root cause and corrective actions.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Environmental Health & Safety

  • Continuously improve the Gallery’s safety culture and performance by ensuring site safety policies and procedures are followed, positively communicating and remediating safety issues in a timely manner with stakeholder feedback, and being a key leading resource in the Gallery’s Safety Committee and similar meetings

  • Work with facilities, operations, tenants, and people & culture to identify and implement improvement projects around safety (ergonomics), cost reduction, and efficiency.

  • Periodically inspect the site with the Facilities Manager to maintain housekeeping standards. Ensure that clean-up is done after deinstallation and installation work, and that conditions that could lead to housekeeping problems are corrected.

  • Assume the duties as outlined in the Emergency Preparedness Plan during emergency situations; provide support to Emergency Response incidents; Forge relationships with local law enforcement; Ensure work environments are adequate and safe.

  • Manage the company’s hazard communication compliance program and the Safety Data Sheet system.

Leadership

  • Lead proactively, to include coaching, disciplinary action, conduct constructive performance and project a positive image of the organization to employees, customers, industry, and community.

  • Participate in the recruiting, interviewing and hiring of departmental employees.

  • Manage training and development of the operations team,

  • Model and instill Gallery values within the operations team and lead by example

Requirements

Education and Experience

Candidates who excel in this role, tend to have the following qualifications and skills, though others may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of related experience or equivalent work experience

  • Demonstrated passion for operational and logistics excellence

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and follows California and Federal safety practices and environmental standards. Understanding of building codes, permitting process and construction practices.

  • Results-oriented project management capabilities, 2+ years project management experience.

  • Strong financial management skill and proven ability to execute projects up to $5M

  • Demonstrates effective, collaborative communication and conflict resolution skills.

  • Excellent influencing, communications and collaborative skills

  • Management and leadership experience, ideally both direct and across departmental projects

  • Strategic thinker who can provide well thought through solutions based on data analysis while considering the ‘bigger picture’

  • A high level of enthusiasm, creativity, self-motivation, resourcefulness and effectiveness as a team player.

  • Commitment to continuous improvement.

  • Experience in an art gallery or museum a plus.

  • Familiarity with MS Office.

Work Environment

  • Fast and continuous work pace with variable workload

  • Frequent contact with staff and public under a variety of circumstances

  • Potential risk exposure to hazards from chemical, flammable materials, gas or electrical equipment

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License

  • Occasional travel may be required
