Pioneer Works seeks a new Director of Technology to oversee our Technology Lab.
The Pioneer Works Technology Lab fosters an environment for thoughtful collaborations between artists and creative technologists. We provide tools and engineering support for creatives to develop projects in emerging technologies spanning robotics, AI, mixed reality, and additive manufacturing. The Lab connects to the larger community through a variety of public programs that include social impact hackathons, conferences, classes, and workshops.
The Director will oversee the Lab’s growth as a thought leader in the field of technology through a renowned residency program and year round workshops, public programs and conferences designed to expose the wider community to cutting edge artistic practices from the broader technology community.
Our Tech Residency Program invites artists, programmers, and researchers to create work that addresses challenging social issues through the lens of new technologies. The Director will help residents develop their projects in our labs, facilitate access to one-on-one consultations with experienced software and hardware engineers; and oversee procurement & management of cutting edge equipment, and work to create unique opportunities for the public to engage with their work, both onsite and remotely.
The Director will oversee the Technology Department’s public programs. This includes, but is not limited to, Second Sundays, Pioneer Works’ monthly open studio and community day, conceptualizing hands-on demonstrations, performances and studio visits; The Software for Artists Conference, bringing together hundreds of tech-art practitioners to share their work and learn from one another; and the Red Hook Regatta, a community event and educational workshop melding 3D modeling with the history of the Red Hook neighborhood.
The Director will collaborate across the organization, working with our Head of Residencies and Classes, as well as our Director of Music, to create a cohesive residency experience; collaborating with our digital team to create online programs, interviews, podcasts and more, to raise the profile of our residents to an international audience; They will also work with our education department to facilitate creative education in tech for all ages. The Director will also manage a part-time Technology Associate who maintains equipment resources in the lab, acts as a department administrator, and conducts their own self directed research in advanced technologies. The Director of Technology reports directly to the Artistic Director.

5+ years experience in management positions, preferably with a focus in creative technology
Advanced knowledge of AI, web technologies, 3D printing, VR/AR and related mediums
Demonstrated commitment to supporting underrepresented or marginalized individuals in the arts & technology
Knowledge of, or prior experience in, the creative technology community as maker, researcher and/or administrator
Experience working on creative projects that make use of new and emerging technologies
A proven track record in building outside partnerships with a focus on sustainable growth
Fundraising experience in both institutional and individual giving communities
Experience working with arts residency programs a plus
Ability to focus, prioritize and execute in a fast-paced environment
Experience managing budgets and working across departments
Excellent communicator, with strong interpersonal skills; decisive, confident and humane
A creative and entrepreneurial spirit
A passion for interdisciplinary collaboration and artistic experimentation
