A gallery with locations on West Coast seeks a Director of Sales and Artist Relations for their New York space. This is a managerial role that will oversee projects, budgets and staff requiring excellent organizational and communication skills. The gallery is looking for someone with a proven track record with closing sales. Successful candidates must have a deep knowledge of contemporary art, a sensitivity to artists and their needs, and an ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Strong writing skills are necessary. Regular travel is required.

Responsibilities

The Director, Sales and Artist Relations responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Sales:

  • Develop client relationships and generate gallery sales through art fairs, presentations, exhibitions, and walk-in traffic

  • Develop with owner, sales marketing plans, including annual and quarterly sales goals

  • Research ways to expand sales and development of new prospects

  • Create and develop client and potential client presentations via viewing rooms, private rooms, studio visits, and physical and PDF presentations

  • Ability to participate in physical presentations of work, studio visits and art fairs

Operations / Artist Relations:

  • Assist in all Gallery operations including sales, logistics, marketing, exhibitions, art fairs and management

  • Act as the main liaison between the gallery and our artists regarding all projects, exhibitions, and presentations

  • Alongside the owner of the gallery maintain relationships with all gallery artists and artists we are doing collaborations with

  • Keep updated on latest career news from all our artists

  • Comfortable with, and physically capable of, light art handling, installation, and shipping tasks

  • Managing vendors and external relationships including shippers, mounters, printers, framers, craters, art handlers, suppliers, etc.

Programming and Exhibitions:

  • Assist owner and guest curators to extend and continue meaningful programming, including exhibitions and art fairs

  • Assist in planning and executing new exhibition opportunities

  • Researching new artists, guest curators and art fair opportunities

Art Fairs:

  • The Gallery has a rigorous art fair schedule, and the Director will be central to its continued success

  • Strategize with owner of the gallery and senior staff on sales objective and goals

  • Preparing international and domestic art fair applications

  • Assist in Supervision of all logistics for art fairs: shipments of art, travel, installation, and support materials

  • Professionally representing the gallery at art fairs

  • Ability to travel and work at art fairs and other events as needed

Requirements
  • B.A. from four-year college or university (arts-related field preferred) MFA or MA preferred

  • Minimum of 3-5 years as Gallery Director

  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience in fine art sales, selling contemporary paintings, drawings, and photography

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Artist Liaison

  • Experience working with museum curators

  • Experience in working prominent art fairs (Art Basel, Frieze, etc)

  • Understanding of handling fine artwork

  • Experience managing project budgets

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills

  • Team player and proven leader

  • Experience managing staff across departments, locations, and time zones

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize

  • Experience using an artwork database (Artlogic preferred)

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Knowledgeable using the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, inDesign, Illustrator, etc), light coding, and project management platforms

  • Professional Dress and Demeanor

  • Excellent References
