Tanya Leighton seeks an experienced Director to oversee all gallery activities in Berlin and internationally. A successful candidate will speak both English and German fluently, and demonstrate experience of leading a small team in a fast-moving gallery environment. Working directly with the owner they will build on the gallery’s reputation as a respected industry leader.
Tasks and Responsibilities
In conversation with the owner, develop the exhibition and events programme across the two spaces in Berlin, and off-site projects internationally.
Maximise sales in primary and secondary markets, drawing on knowledge and network to place artworks in significant public and private collections.
Lead the gallery’s digital strategy, social media activities and develop the online viewing room programme.
Prepare presentations for private viewings with curators and private collectors.
Initiate and host in-person and virtual tours and meetings.
As the gallery’s primary liaison, work closely with the represented artists in all areas of the production, exhibition, and promotion of their work.
Liaise with curators and institutional representatives to develop opportunities for the artists’ work in museum exhibitions and at biennials.
Financial oversight, monitoring and maintaining tight annual budgets, monthly cash flows, sales forecasts and profit and loss reports.
Manage a small team in Berlin and work effectively across time zones in communication with the gallery owner.
Write descriptive texts about key artworks, fair applications, press releases and formal communications.
Build and maintain the most productive, efficient and happy team.
Represent the gallery, its artists and programme at international art events at the highest level.
Develop gallery protocol to ensure the highest standard of presentation and client service in all areas.
The Director will work closely with the Gallery Manager, Finance Manager, Registrar and Gallery Assistants.
Candidate Specifications
Minimum of 4 years of experience working as a Director in a commercial gallery or similar position in the art world.
Postgraduate degree in Art History or other art adjacent subject.
An experienced client manager with a demonstrated record of significant institutional and private sales.
Professional art writing experience with demonstrated published outcomes.
Proven experience of steady financial oversight, maintaining a strong, successful business.
Experience of ambitious digital development and online sales platforms preferred.
A broad professional network in Germany is preferred.
