Reporting to the Associate Dean at the Mannes School of Music, the Assistant Director is a key member of the academic leadership team. Working with departmental leadership such as the Vice-Dean of Curriculum and Learning and the Director of CoPA Advising, the Assistant Director of Academic Affairs will provide leadership in the areas of academic planning, part-time faculty affairs, and student affairs.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Academic Affairs:
Oversee academic planning and implementation of the Mannes undergraduate and graduate curriculum, including course descriptions and scheduling
School-based representative on Course Catalog Committee
Responsible for ensuring that practices and policies at Mannes are in compliance with the CoPA policy handbook
Part-time Faculty Affairs:
Responsible for onboarding of faculty
Primary person responsible for ensuring accurate registrations as it pertains to part-time faculty pay, partnering with Human Resources on the creation and distribution of appointment letters
Ensure that course offerings are compliant with the part-time faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and liaise with Labor Relations
Student Affairs:
Serve as primary point person for addressing academic-related student issues in consultation with relevant partners
Create and manage information system for assessing student abilities, aptitudes, interests, and academic growth as they progress through the curriculum, with input from small ensemble manager, large ensemble manager, and relevant faculty
Manage the private-lesson program; first point of contact for students throughout the course of their study
Lead students and academic advisors to create and monitor self-directed student courses of study to ensure that students can successfully leverage the cross-disciplinary offerings at CoPA and the university.
Promote and manage cross-and inter-disciplinary curricular opportunities for students
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor degree in music or a related field required (graduate degree preferred)
Strong ability to assess student’s abilities as musicians, with the Mannes vision and curriculum serving as the evaluative guide
Deep knowledge of the performing arts beyond classical music, including jazz, drama, dance, and related fields
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Interpersonal skills that allow the individual to function in a variety of settings among widely different groups of people
A unique combination of creative and analytical talents
The ability to work productively and graciously under strict time constraints
Flexibility, and a “team player” sensibility.
Previous experience working with faculty in higher education.
Ability to manage multiple tasks, to prioritize them in creative and responsible ways, and work effectively with a wide range of other offices.
Substantial people skills, including leadership, facilitation, and the desire to work as part of a high performing team.
