Edward Hopper House Museum and Study Center

The Edward Hopper House Museum and Study Center is located at 82. N. Broadway in Nyack, New York. The Museum’s mission is to recognize Edward Hopper’s significant contribution to American art. We do this by preserving his birthplace and family home, nurturing community engagement with the arts, and by serving as a primary resource to scholars and artists.

Position Overview

The Executive Director will provide oversight and direction for the Museum’s day-to-day operations. The Executive Director will provide leadership for Museum programming, and the establishment and implementation of the Museum’s strategy for future development in collaboration with the Board of Trustees. The Executive Director serves as the principal face of the organization to supporters and donors, members, and the community.

Responsibilities

Museum Management and Programming

  • Oversee day-to-day operation of the Museum

  • Hire, supervise, and manage all Staff

  • In conjunction with Staff, plan and oversee exhibitions, curatorial activities, and special Museum events

  • In conjunction with Staff, initiate, monitor, and manage Museum programs

  • In conjunction with Staff, monitor, and oversee all computer programs and systems related to Museum’s operations

  • Initiate, develop, and oversee all internal and external Museum communications and ensure consistency with Museum branding and messaging

  • Ensure that Museum policies and practices are compliant with relevant regulations

  • Meet regularly with the Board of Trustees, including the Executive Committee, and report on Museum operations and finances

  • Develop and maintain relationships with organizations that can support Museum’s operational and funding activities

  • Oversee security and safety of the building and grounds

  • Contract with and oversee suppliers of services to the Museum

Financial Management

  • Prepare the annual budget and submit to Board for review

  • Monitor day-to-day banking account activities

  • Oversee daily financials as needed and authorize substantive payments/expenses

  • Identify and implement strategies for increasing Museum revenues and reducing costs

  • Review and develop fiscal policy with Treasurer and Finance Committee

  • Co-ordinate with bookkeeper on cash activity and balances

  • Oversee the preparation and filing tax returns and other legally required documents

Fundraising and Financial Support

  • Engage and support members of the Board in fundraising strategies and outreach

  • Serve as the primary contact for potential and existing donors

  • Identify and cultivate current and prospective donors

  • Seek and secure sponsors for Museum exhibitions, events, and programs

  • Oversee timely updates and management of membership and Donor Perfect database

  • Develop and implement growth strategies for membership

  • Work with Staff to research new funding and grant opportunities

  • Apply for and secure grants consistent with Museum’s strategy, mission, and operations

  • Attend all fundraising and key membership events

Community Relations

  • Develop and maintain relationships with local boards, organizations, elected officials, and others who can support the Museum’s operations, activities, and funding

  • Initiate and maintain community-focused programs that build support for the Museum

  • Represent the Museum at key community and business events

  • Develop and implement strategies for increasing community support of the Museum

Requirements

Salary Range

$60,000-70,000 depending on experience and background.
