The Calder Foundation, a nonprofit institution dedicated to preserving the legacy of the twentieth-century artist Alexander Calder, is seeking to hire an External Affairs Assistant to play a key role in contributing to and maintaining the Foundation’s social media accounts and online research archive; assisting the External Affairs team with communications, press relations, and events; and developing new educational programming.

Responsibilities

Social Media

  • Develop content for the Calder Foundation and Atelier Calder social media accounts, manage content calendar, and act as community manager for all channels

  • Conceptualize new avenues to grow Atelier Calder’s audience and content

  • Track social media engagement for Calder Foundation channels

Online Research Archive

  • Undertake dedicated research projects for the online archive that are targeted to deepening connections and broadening the scope of visual and historical content

  • Perform weekly website maintenance, including updates to news, exhibition listings, and the addition of new content

Communications, Press Relations, and Events

  • Build and update the Foundation’s contacts database

  • Draft eblasts, press releases, and other communications documents

  • Liaise with external press offices as well as with journalists to pitch and provide images and information on Foundation projects

  • Support the Director of External Affairs in planning and staging special events, including lectures, performances, receptions, exhibition openings, etc., from conception through onsite logistics (requiring occasional weekend or evening hours)

  • Administer invitation mailings and manage RSVPs

Educational Programming

  • Research and analyze educational programming implemented by national and international museums

  • Compile a dossier of Calder-related activities that are currently implemented by these museums and develop alternatives to problematic curricula that underscore misconceptions about the artist

  • Build a dedicated Calder Foundation Education Guide to live on calder.org that can be distributed to partner institutions

Requirements
  • B.A. in Art History or a related field

  • Minimum of two years of work or internship experience in communications, education, or social media management in an arts-related field

  • Outstanding interpersonal and written communication skills and high attention to detail

  • Computer literacy in Macintosh OS; familiarity with FileMaker Pro, WordPress, and Adobe Creative Suite is appreciated

  • Basic understanding of French is appreciated but not required

The ideal candidate has a passion for communications, education, archival research, and social media and is interested in working for a nonprofit arts organization in New York City. An ability to multitask, prioritize, and work both collaboratively and in a self- directed manner is essential. Visual literacy and an interest in Calder are very important to the position.

The External Affairs Assistant will work closely with the Director of Exhibitions and External Affairs and the Deputy Director of Research and External Affairs. Working hours are 10am–6pm from Monday–Friday in person at the Calder Foundation’s offices in New York City. The starting salary for this position is $42,000–$45,000 per year. This position includes a generous benefits package, including paid sick and vacation leave and optional 403(b) account.
