Aperture seeks a Communications Director to shape and execute all messaging and communications for Aperture’s marketing, press, and digital strategies for the brand as a whole, as well as for campaigns around publications, promotional programs, and fundraising activities. The Communications Director must be a highly organized critical and strategic thinker, be a strong results-driven and creative individual with exceptional communication skills, show leadership working in a highly collaborative environment, and work well with both artists and Board members. The position reports to the Executive Director.
As a leader at Aperture, the Communications Director will work closely with the Executive Director and Sales and Marketing Director to develop company-wide, sector-specific, highly integrated, and systematic initiatives that support external and internal communications, new outreach, fundraising, strategic partnerships, and long-term relationships. The Communications Director will oversee an internal team responsible for the day-to-day execution of the website’s content, e-newsletters, social media platforms, and all publicity and media-related efforts. S/he will also work closely with fellow senior staff members to develop and maintain schedules and budgets for all initiatives.
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Arts, or Liberal Arts
Proven track record of devising and executing effective promotional strategies and placing media stories
Successful track record of mounting or supervising social media campaigns
Established connections and relationships in top-tier media outlets across a wide spectrum
At least 8-10 years of professional experience in the arts and culture, with a focus in marketing, communications, media relations, publishing, and editorial pursuits
Excellent written and organizational skills and attention to detail
Proven experience managing a team, schedules, and budgets
Ability to pitch projects “cold” to new contacts, both in writing and in person
Deep knowledge of the photography, art, and cultural landscapes in NYC, nationally and internationally
