The Curatorial Assistant provides administrative support to the Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and the Curatorial Department. This individual is responsible for organizing and maintaining internal and external correspondence, answering basic research questions, interacting with visiting scholars, donors and vendors and participating in the research and interpretation of the Museum’s global art collections.
Provides administrative support for the Curatorial Department
Handles general incoming and outgoing correspondence and interoffice and external mail for the department
Coordinates all incoming traveling exhibition proposals for curatorial review and related correspondence
Assists with exhibitions and collections-related projects with individual curators as needed, including creating and updating checklists and other materials
Working with curators and collections management, serves as greeter and liaison with visiting scholars and curators and facilitates external visits to study collection objects
As requested by the Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs, periodically conduct research related to the Museum’s main collecting areas; African, American, Asian and Decorative Arts
Coordinates with Registrar to integrate curatorial material into collection files
Serves as liaison with library, registrar, exhibitions staff and Director’s office
Serves as liaison with donors and vendors; maintains up-to-date addresses and other pertinent information
Schedules curatorial departmental meetings and other meetings as necessary for curators
Handles photocopying and scanning of collections-related materials
Working with the Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs, oversees Curatorial Division budget
Maintains a listing of current appraisers and conservators for public information
Serves as coordinator for the NJ Arts Annual, contact for artists, prospectus mailings, and artist submissions created for review by curator/guest curator
BA degree in Art History or Museum Studies; background in art or arts administration; with previous curatorial experience
Proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, research and database management
Experience with collection management software a plus
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong organization and project management skills
