We seek an experienced Editor to handle a wide range of print and digital projects that communicate our mission to our diverse audiences.
Act as the primary editor for a wide variety of print and digital marketing and external communications materials, including palmcards, signs and wayfinding, Membership brochures and invitations, events-related calendars and postcards, press releases, and other materials, as needed
Work with Museum client departments to pursue substantive edits, which may include rewriting copy or line edits, using Microsoft Word (“track changes”) or Google doc features during the editing process
Proof interim and final versions of all types of projects, either with traditional hard-copy markup or by entering revisions directly in InCopy, MailChimp, or other programs or platforms
Act as a second reader for primary editors on other projects
Work closely with Graphic Design to develop, review, circulate, and approve print and digital materials, using agreed-upon tracking procedures
Track requests and projects, making sure proofs/previews are circulated, reviewed, and approved by all necessary departments
Continually consult with other editors to ensure styling is consistent across all materials
Act as second reader or line editor for occasional in-gallery labels and text panels, as needed
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
Three to five years of experience as the primary project editor in a cultural or nonprofit institution, with museum or visual arts experience preferred
Excellent skills in traditional editing, copyediting, and proofreading for a wide range of print and digital media and content, with a keen eye for detail
Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
Knowledge of traditional proofreading and copyediting marks
Experience editing a range of print and digital materials, including brochures, pamphlets, signage, press releases, email campaigns, and related content
Proven ability to work diplomatically and tactfully with a wide range of authors and writers
Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, pursue several projects simultaneously, and meet agreed-upon deadlines
Excellent skills in oral and written communication, with proven effectiveness in managing complex collaborations with graphic designers, photo researchers, curators, and other stakeholders
Experience and comfort with Microsoft Word (especially editing tools), Excel, and Outlook
Flexibility and comfort in learning about and working with existing digital publishing platforms and tools, such as Google Cultural Institute, MailChimp or similar email providers, Google docs and forms, Trello, Adobe InCopy, etc., as well as any new ones that might emerge
Ability to quickly change course, when needed, for time-sensitive projects or as procedures changes

Additional qualifications:
Visual arts, art history, or museum background, and familiarity with the language of art history and contemporary criticism
Ability to code basic HTML
