Sterling Ruby Studio, located in Vernon / Los Angeles, CA, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Fabrication Manager to join our team.

In this senior position you will oversee all aspects of shop fabrication and manage a two-person support team. You will report to the Production Manager and Head of Operations.

Successful candidates will possess a broad range of skills and extensive knowledge of woodworking and related fabrication disciplines. An in-depth understanding of tools, machinery and equipment is required, along with the ability to generate and work from detailed (digital) production drawings, documents, files and cut sheets. 3-5 years of experience in a similar position/field with direct experience managing projects and personnel is a must.

Core areas of fabrication:

  • Large-scale aluminum painting panels

  • Float frames in maple, walnut, etc.

  • Reinforced pedestals (for large ceramic works)

  • Vacuum press mounting/lamination

  • Furniture/object refinishing and restoration

  • Bespoke hardware components and fixtures

Hours are Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm. Salary is commensurate with experience. Excellent health and benefits package.

Responsibilities

Oversight on all internal fabrication projects:

  • Maintain a hands-on role in fabrication

  • Set and maintain schedule for projects

  • Delegate fabrication tasks

  • Maintain quality of product

  • Provide direction and problem solving solutions during fabrication

  • Train staff in new processes and techniques

  • Design/test/build prototypes, jigs, and templates, train staff in their use and introduce them into production

  • Design and implement steps for production projects for efficiency while maintaining best possible craft

  • Develop/test/implement new wood finishing techniques

  • Maintain/update archive of projects/products

  • Create/archive new digital files illustrating production steps for new projects

Shop & Tool:

  • Set and maintain schedule for tool maintenance

  • Troubleshoot repair issues with tools

  • Check and maintain calibration of tools

  • Develop and maintain tooling/settings archive

  • Maintain inventory of hardware and consumables

  • Create storage solutions for material inventory

  • Create/modify material handling devices for best use in shop

  • Maintain clean safe operating environment

Admin, HR & OSHA:

  • Approve time and attendance for direct reports (bi-weekly) via payroll platform

  • Manage/approve vacation and other time off for direct reports

  • Conduct periodic performance reviews with direct reports

  • Certified forklift operator and trainer

  • Maintain studio-wide Respiratory Maintenance Program

  • Maintain proper and safe operation of OSHA required eye wash/shower

  • Maintain hazardous material list

  • Oversight of collection of SDS sheets for all products used/maintain SDS library as new products are brought in to shop

Requirements
  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar position/field with direct experience managing projects and personnel

  • Proficiency in G Suite productivity tools, such as Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Hangouts & Meet; ability to interact with spreadsheets and databases, shared docs and calendars

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted and be able to bend, stretch and stand for extended periods of time

Additional skills a plus:

  • Experience with art handling, installation, logistics and packing

  • Metalworking

  • CAD
