Maxwell Graham/Essex Street Gallery is looking for a serious and dedicated Director to play an active and integral role in the gallery’s operations.
Maxwell Graham/Essex Street Gallery is a mid-sized political and conceptual art gallery located in New York City’s Lower East Side, and represents local and international artists such as Park McArthur, SoiL Thornton, Sarah Rapson, Cameron Rowland, Carolyn Lazard, and Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys.
Details:
Full-time, permanent.
Tuesday through Saturday, 10AM-6PM, plus additional evenings and days as needed.
Start date in mid-August 2021.
Yearly salary commensurate with experience, plus commission opportunities.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
Help envision art.
Co-manage the day-to-day operations of the gallery including shipping, consignment and loan forms; storage and inventory maintenance; image, pdf, and press packet formatting and editing.
Co-manage the gallery’s programming, including exhibition planning and support.
Create program materials, explanatory texts and press releases.
Liaison with artists and facilitate production.
Promote scholarship on gallery artists and programming.
Engage with the public, curators, writers, collectors and advisors.
Represent the gallery at art fairs and exhibition openings.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Deep and diverse knowledge of post-war contemporary art is a must.
Commitment to critical and challenging art is a must
Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of sales, management/administrative, and/or curatorial experience at a gallery, museum, or kunsthalle.
Skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, Photoshop, InDesign), Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive), and ArtBase or similar digital art database.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
