The Helen Frankenthaler Foundation (HFF), established and endowed by the artist during her lifetime (1928-2011), became active in 2013, on the closing of Frankenthaler’s estate. The Foundation is dedicated to promoting greater public interest in and understanding of the visual arts. It supports the artist’s legacy through a variety of initiatives, including exhibitions, loans of artwork, research and publications, conservation, grants, educational programs for the public and the scholarly community, and through the Helen Frankenthaler Catalogue Raisonné, LLC, the publishing of a catalogue raisonné. As the principal beneficiary of Frankenthaler’s estate, the Foundation’s holdings include an extensive collection of artwork and original papers and materials pertaining to her life and work. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Helen Frankenthaler Foundation seeks an experienced individual for a newly created position responsible for managing digital image assets and rights permissions for use in publications, press, and related purposes, both external and internal. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely and collaboratively with colleagues in a small office environment, the Images, Rights and Digital Assets Manager will be the Foundation’s primary liaison with those seeking digital files of artworks by Helen Frankenthaler and other materials held in the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Archives.
COMPENSATION:
This is a permanent position, full-time or part-time (3 days/week minimum). Competitive salary. Generous benefits.
DUTIES:
o Catalogue and maintain a database of digital files with appropriate metadata for artworks and other archival materials from legacy storage systems, ongoing digitization, and outside sources, including various photographers
o Scan artwork images and other archival materials and catalogue in database
o Develop and implement digitization workflow, metadata and file-naming standards
o Develop and manage any database modifications in collaboration with colleagues and database software consultant
o Work with colleagues to select and source images, ensure that digital files are color-corrected, edited and properly prepared, including precise silhouetting of artwork images. Provide and/or proof captions, credits, copyright information and other associated text as needed
o Obtain necessary copyright permissions and coordinate agreements for all publication uses. Track and monitor external licensing agreements and maintain physical documentation thereof
o Serve as point person for in-house image needs providing appropriate files as described above for public programs, website, social media, newsletter, collections, research, etc.
o Liaise with external constituents, including HFF’s copyright and licensing partner and communications consultants, to provide publication-ready images, captions and credits, review layouts, secure permissions and approvals, coordinating with HFF colleagues as appropriate
o Serve as a liaison for other external publication requests, including those from publishers, authors, museums, and galleries, to monitor image, text and permissions standards, coordinating with HFF colleagues and external constituents as necessary to ensure that HFF’s requirements are met
o Ensure that all digital images files and accompanying material meet the highest standards of excellence and comply with HFF’s house style, mission, and strategic goals
o Track publication uses to ensure that HFF’s requirements are met
o Other duties as requested by Executive Director or senior staff
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS REQUIRED:
o Bachelor’s degree required (graduate degree preferred) in art, art history, English, journalism, library science, or related fields
o Minimum of 5 years related experience with digital asset management; familiarity with handling and digitizing archival materials preferred
o Advanced understanding of digital asset management standards and best practices including file-naming, metadata, file formats, and workflows. Experience with Collective Access or similar open-source digital asset management software preferred
o Advanced proficiency with image editing in Photoshop and/or other relevant professional software; emphasis on strong visual acuity and color sensibility in preparing publication-ready digital files to exacting standards
o Knowledge of print publishing and media technology
o Proficiency with Mac-based computer systems, and Word, Excel, Adobe Suite. FileMaker Pro helpful
o Experience researching and securing permissions from copyright holders and working with copyright and licensing management consultants required; understanding of copyright law preferred
o Excellent writing and communication skills; proficiency in proofreading and copyediting; superior attention to detail
o Outstanding project management and time-management skills to meet short deadlines
o Proven ability to work both independently and cooperatively as part of a team
o Experience with and knowledge of arts organizations such as museums and galleries preferred
