The Junior Designer is responsible for contributing creative solutions, and strategic stewardship of the Pioneer Works brand as well as creating assets, systems and strategies for the Design Department and team. This role reports to the Associate Design Director and will touch all aspects of the institution with a specific focus on advertising/marketing assets for social media as well as support for our institutional website and online editorial platform Broadcast (pioneerworks.org/broadcast).
Our design team works closely with the institution and its artists-in-residence to create unique creative solutions for a wide variety of projects across physical and digital media with a focus on publications, exhibitions, wayfinding, branding, motion graphic, environmental and web design that support strategic marketing and branding goals. The Junior Designer will be responsible for maintenance, inventory and general operation of the Design Lab: an in-house, Designer run, print and production space for the institution and its artists. Additionally, the Junior Designer will also assist in the coordination of activities in the Lab during public events and open studios.
Work closely with our marketing, web, and editorial departments to design and produce digital materials for our website, newsletter, social media, environmental graphics etc. as assigned by the design department
Utilize conceptual thinking to create brand identities for various programs and events in art, music, science and development departments
Effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects to meet deadlines across print and digital.
Incorporate feedback as needed to ensure quality control and a consistent overall look and feel.
Ability to work/communicate with outside vendors in required media
Documentation, display and archiving of completed projects across all media
Produce technical files and prep for final production in both print and digital mediums
Assist the design team with additional creative tasks as needed including book layout, motion graphics, exhibition materials, and merchandise.
1-2 years of experience in a professional design role
BFA or BA degree in design (or equivalent experience)
Publication & branding design experience in the field of Art & Design and in marketing/advertising
Portfolio demonstrating a strong understanding of design principles and working knowledge of design software. Must also contain branding, print, digital and motion design
Experience and fluency in Adobe Creative Suite design programs (Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects)
Strong communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, but within a team-based environment.
Excellent skills in pre-press, file preparation, and specification for diverse forms of production
Strong written and verbal communication skills
NICE TO HAVE
Fluency with web design, (CSS, HTML and wireframing) strongly preferred
Experience working in Notion/Figma
Experience in type design and working with software such as Glyphs, Robofont, Fontsmith, etc.
Proficiency with equipment including: large-format inkjet plotter, risograph, vinyl-cutter, & hand tools
Experience managing budgets
