The Lab Instructor is a non-exempt (hourly) position reporting to the Educational Labs Manager. The Lab Instructor works as part of a team of staff who facilitate 90-minute, hands-on design challenges for visiting field trip classes in Grades 2–12. Additional work duties include facilitating programming in The Tech Studio, weekend birthday party labs, Girl Scout badge programs, Innovation Labs and The Tech Challenge workshops. All of these programs are designed as interactive programs that focus on engaging students in exploring science, design and engineering. At The Tech we encourage students to use their own innovative ideas and skills. This is a part-time seasonal position and hours are assigned based on the needs of the department.

Responsibilities
  • Teach labs as scheduled in The Tech’s Science Labs during the September 2019 to June 2020 school year. (Labs are offered Monday through Friday at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with occasional afterschool programs at 3 p.m.)

  • Facilitate daily Tech Studio programming a minimum of one day per week (Monday through Friday) of the school year.

  • Attend trainings and lab set-up in early September.

  • Attend class session debriefs and occasional staff meetings as required.

  • Take part in ongoing professional development training and staff meetings, generally taking place outside normal lab shift hours.

  • Teach occasional weekend programs, which generally run at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. from September 2019 to June 2020. A commitment to a minimum of one weekend shift per month is desired.

  • Understand and implement The Tech’s learning principles and philosophy.

  • Maintain and manage lab materials including but not limited to: clean up, reset, and set up materials after each lab; establish and maintain overall organization and cleanliness of labs; restock supplies as needed; and maintain materials inventory.

  • May be asked to fill in on the gallery floor from time to time, especially during holidays.

  • Provide feedback on continuous improvement of the labs.

  • Provide support in The Tech’s evaluation efforts as needed.

  • Understand customer service expectations, training material and general organization policies.

  • Follow The Tech’s safety guidelines and attendance policies.

  • Follow The Tech’s attire and grooming guidelines.

  • Communicate all issues to The Tech staff as they arise.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Pursuing or completed bachelor’s degree in education, science, engineering or equivalent experience.

  • Serious and passionate about science and technology, while also flexible, patient and able to have fun with our students.

  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to communicate technical/scientific ideas to diverse groups of students.

  • Teaching experience or experience working with children in a traditional or non-traditional educational setting.

  • Broad-based knowledge of and demonstrated interest in science, math and technology.

  • Experience with hands-on, cooperative learning instruction highly desired.

  • Excellent organizational skills including time management.

  • Adaptability in delivering content to different ages and levels, as well as the ability to pace lab instruction and make on-the-spot decisions as changes arise.

  • Can offer and take constructive criticism; is happy to seek advice of mentors.

  • Willingness to work weekend days, evenings and holidays.

  • Ability to adhere to The Tech’s grooming guidelines.
