Lead Fabricator Job Summary:

As a Lead Fabricator, you will operate with integrity, transparency, and resourcefulness, supporting our clients and the diverse communities and artists with which we work. An ideal candidate will have relevant experience working on large-scale metal fabrication, be a team player, be comfortable taking a leading role within a team of fabricators, and communicating with clients in person and via email.

This is an opportunity to work on a large-scale specialist project from ground up. The Lead Fabricator will play a key role in major large-scale art fabrication projects with a primary focus on metalworking and welding. They will be responsible for leading a team of fabricators in the assembling, joining, cutting, shaping, welding, and installing of artworks. They will utilize skills in fabrication and welding to create high-quality products that meet the required dimensions and tolerances, including the ability to manage a production schedule and budget, read and interpret technical drawings, calculate material measurements, and meet strict project timelines.

Compensation & Benefits:

This is a full-time (5 days, 40-hour work week) position with benefits and paid annual leave. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

Lead Fabricator Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Outline logistical needs of a project, including material requirements, tools, and equipment necessary for efficient completion;

  • Identify opportunities for process enhancements and efficiency improvements,

  • Monitor project progress, track milestones, and report weekly progress;

  • Manage a team of fabricators;

  • Assemble parts, cut, shape, fabricate, and install metal components;

  • Join metal components using welding techniques, including MIG and TIG

  • Grind and smooth metal finishes to ensure a high-quality finish;

  • Accurately read dimensional drawings and prepare cut lists;

  • Work with a high degree of craftsmanship, skill, and attention to detail;

  • Document fabrication processes; and

  • Maintain an organized, clean, and tidy workspace.

Requirements

Lead Fabricator Skills and Experience:

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep understanding of metal fabrication and welding and will be comfortable working on large-scale projects and managing a team of welders/fabricators. Candidates will also be able to read and understand schematics and blueprints and translate these concepts from miniatures to large-scale artworks, demonstrating basic skills in math and spatial reasoning.

Lead Fabricator Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in metal fabrication;

  • 2-4 years of experience in MIG and TIG welding;

  • Skills in math and spatial reasoning;

  • Strong knowledge of welding tools and procedures;

  • Proficiency in reading dimensional shop drawing;

  • Proficiency in creating technical drawings preferred, but not required;

  • Proven track record of leading and managing large-scale fabrication projects;

  • Ability to:

stand and stay active for 8 hours per day,

lift and move heavy objects (50+ lbs.), and

drive forklifts and scissor lifts.

  • A valid California driver’s license is required.

  • Light travel for work will be occasionally required.
