Major Gifts Manager

SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF ROLE

The Department of Institutional Development at El Museo del Barrio raises funds from private sources to support the mission of the museum. The Major Gifts Manager is a new position for the museum, signaling an emergent priority to build and sustain a community of major donors. The Manager will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of prospective and current major donors. The successful candidate will develop a portfolio of donors giving at various levels, toward building a robust community of those giving $5,000 and more. The Manager will engage donors and prospects personally through meetings and phone, events, tours, and more and will enjoy a fair amount of latitude in creating new opportunities for engagement. The Manager will write proposals, reports, cultivation, and solicitation letters. She/he will research donors and input donor information into the database. This is a great opportunity for someone with an entrepreneurial approach and who is eager to work directly with donors. The incumbent will report to the Director of Institutional Advancement.

Responsibilities
  • Helps build a qualified portfolio of major donors prospects; conduct research and deploy research findings to identify potential donors.

  • Develops and implements plans to cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of donors as assigned. Set up donor visits for self and others including the Executive Director.

  • Drafts funding proposals for Exhibitions, Programming and Engagement initiatives, as well as capacity-building projects.

  • Crafts cultivation newsletter and other communications for major donors and major donor prospects, including renewal letters, monthly e-newsletters, and more. Over-sees the mailing and solicitation schedule.

  • Assists in planning cultivation engagement opportunities, including tours, trips, special art viewings, dinners, closed museum tours, and more.

  • Work closely with the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director and supporters to secure major gifts through special projects events, including El Museo’s fundraising events and exhibitions.

  • For donor events and meetings, research and present support materials, including bios, giving history, meeting objectives, and more.

  • Inputs information regarding donors and prospects learned through interaction and research into Raisers Edge.

  • Helps build and track meetings, contacts, and more, so that we measure activities and learn over time what works and doesn’t work. Contribute to the overall learning environment.

  • Serves as an ambassador at events that present opportunities for donor cultivation. • Helps foster a philanthropic culture within the organization, sharing learnings and inspiring others to join in engaging donors.

  • Attends fundraising seminars and training session to build and refine skills.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree required

  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills; strong organizational skills; detail and interpersonal skills; engaging presentation skills

  • Previous track record of success in major gift fundraising and knowledge of planned giving

  • Sound knowledge of laws, practices and philosophy of charitable giving, and commitment to the Donor Bill of Rights

  • Demonstrated track record of financial development and/or sales productivity in a complex work environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse array of personalities under pressure and deadlines

  • Creative, resourceful, entrepreneurial mindset, with roll up your sleeves mentality. • Excellent team work and collaboration skills - required • Solid computer skills: proficiency in Microsoft, Excel/Word/PowerPoint

  • Three or more years front-line fundraising development experience with at least 1-2 years of major gift experience,, preferably in a cultural context

  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge NXT

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse array of personalities under pressure and deadlines; and

  • Quarterly travel will be an essential part of this position, as well as participation in evening and weekend activities.

  • Qualities such as flexibility, collaboration, and the ability to work well with others as well as a sense of humor are desirable
