Oolite Arts, in partnership with Burnaway, an Atlanta-based magazine of contemporary art and criticism, seeks an experienced writer to lead our new partnership focused on bringing critical visual arts writing to Miami-Dade County. The Miami Contributing Editor will be able to work independently with guidance from the team at Burnaway and the Education & Community Engagement Manager at Oolite Arts. This position is based in Miami, but primarily remote with occasional in-person meetings.

Responsibilities

The Miami Contributing Editor will report to Oolite Arts’ Education & Community Engagement Manager and Burnaway’s Artistic Director and be part of Burnaway’s editorial Masthead. They are responsible for commissioning new writing centering artwork produced in Miami-Dade County.

  • Miami Contributing Editor responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying local and non-local writers to commission new writing about art in Miami-Dade County

  • Working with writers and Burnaway to edit and prepare final publication of 2 pieces per month

  • Writing one new work on a monthly basis to be included in the monthly publication

  • Keeping an organized program calendar to track progress of publication

  • Working as a liaison between the commissioned writers and Burnaway & Oolite Arts

  • Attending all necessary meetings in person and/or virtually, as needed

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.

  • 1-2 years of experience in arts writing, editing, and/or copy editing.

  • Based in Miami-Dade County.

  • Experience with and knowledge of the visual arts landscape in Miami-Dade County.

  • Exceptional project-management and program coordination skills.

  • Demonstrable editorial skills and experience with scheduling procedures & production.

  • Knowledge of contemporary visual arts and a genuine interest in critical arts writing.

  • Detail oriented, self starter with exceptional organizational skills.

  • Proficient in oral and written English language required; bilingual Spanish and/or Creole is a plus

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Understanding and strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
