Job Summary

The full-time Manager of People and Engagement will serve as the central source of support for all full- and part-time employees, independent contractors, interns, and fellows at SI. This position will design and lead initiatives to foster and strengthen a respectful and collaborative work environment guided by SI’s mission and commitment to equity and inclusion. Reporting to the SI Director, the Manager of People and Engagement will oversee all employee and contractual engagements by implementing workplace recruitment, on-boarding, scheduling, payroll, evaluation, and compliance efforts in coordination with SI’s Finance Manager. The Manager of People and Engagement will oversee the visitor experience at SI’s galleries, working closely with the dedicated Visitor Services Associates and Gallery Attendant (GA) teams in ensuring security and safety policies and tracking attendance and engagement metrics. This position will provide employee relations advice and management, including conflict mediation and workplace compliance training.

Schedule

Tues – Saturday, 10AM to 6PM with occasional night and evening event support.

Compensation

$55,000-$65,000 range, and commensurate with experience. SI offers a competitive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision coverage; a health reimbursement account (HRA); commuter benefits; and generous paid time off.

Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

o Ensure that SI recruitment processes attract a highly diverse and talented staff.

o Design and implement new-hire orientation and onboarding programs.

o Coordinate SI’s values-aligned trainings and professional development opportunities.

o Provide employee relations advice and management, including conflict resolution and workplace harassment prevention.

o Coordinate building operations meetings with the Head of Exhibitions & Operations.

o Co-lead the IDEAs for Change (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility) internal working group.

o Oversee the enforcement of security and safety procedures and protocols in galleries, and support GA staff as they ensure the safety of artwork.

o Train GA staff in exhibition and program content and oversee daily team meetings to convey any programmatic, operations, or special event information to the team.

o Regularly liaise with the Head of Education & Community Engagement to ensure best practices in visitor experiences.

o Manage GA and intern scheduling and payroll.

o Oversee and administer benefits offerings to eligible employees in coordination with SI’s Finance office, including employee time off requests processing and tracking.

o Liaise with the Printed Matter St Mark’s store manager to ensure clear communications and operations success.

o Track and manage all visitorship statistics, including visitor counter software.

o Work with Director on drafting HR policies and employee handbook language to ensure ongoing best practices.

Requirements

Qualifications

o A passion for people and contemporary art.

o Minimum 3-5 years experience in managing employees and upholding human resource policies and benefits.

o Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop a high degree of personal credibility at all levels of the organization.

o Connection with and active engagement in human resources networks, with an understanding of trends, innovative programs, and methods for applying them.

o Leadership experience and the ability to work with individuals from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.

o Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage calendars and schedules and to complete projects on time.

o Previous experience handling confidential information.

o Ability to identify and positively resolve visitor and/or staff issues or concerns in the moment, with strong decision-making skills necessary.

o Effective and persuasive communications skills; able to write and speak clearly and present information to a wide variety of individuals.

o Foreign language skills preferred.
