Job Description

We are currently seeking a versatile and experienced part-time Production Designer. This contract position supports our small production and design team as they work with editorial and marketing to produce upwards of fifty books a year, along with marketing materials, and take care of an extensive backlist. Reporting to the Production Manager, you will also assist and take direction from the Art Director.

Hourly From: $20/hr To $30/hr

Responsibilities
  • Initial layout and typesetting of book text

  • Fine-tuning and problem-solving interior design elements

  • Making careful, sometimes extensive, editorial and design corrections to page proofs

  • Assisting with our internal image review and editing workflow

  • Building Marketing & Publicity ads and collaterals (both print and digital)

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • 2–3 years combined education and/or experience in any of these areas: graphic design, print production, prepress, book/newspaper/magazine publishing

  • Expertise using Adobe InDesign & Photoshop, font management software, macOS

  • Proficiency with Google Apps, Office 365, and file collaboration software (Basecamp, Dropbox)

  • Excellent time management skills, meticulous eye for detail, and superior organizational skills

  • Ability to multitask and switch gears quickly, reprioritize workload as needed, and proactively communicate with your remote colleagues

  • Post-secondary education

Attributes and assets:

  • Responsible, respectful, friendly, and creative, you can work independently or collaboratively

  • Superior command of the written English language, you are a strong reader and aspiring grammarian

  • Typesetting fanatic! Not only can you input ellipses, en and em dashes, and discretional breaks, you understand where and why they are used

  • You are no slouch when it comes to technical/production skills: the Scripts panel is part of your workspace; you build out InDesign styles based on root parent styles; you know your PostScript OTF fonts and avoid System fonts; you use accurate blacks, never attempt registration black, and don’t get you started on RGB vs the CMYK gamut!

Additional Info:

Compensation: hourly rate of $20–$27, commensurate with experience. We’re offering a six-month contract with a commitment of 2.5 days per week.

This position would be a great fit for a seasoned print pro looking to supplement their graphic design practice with steady part-time work. Alternatively, this could also be an excellent opportunity for a junior graphic designer to hone their foundational knowledge and learn the intricacies of book publishing from a supportive and experienced team.
