A conservation studio in Chicago is seeking a Senior Conservation Framer to join their team. The successful candidate will oversee the running of the framing department which will include team management, as well as project estimation and oversight. The person in this position will be responsible for meeting with clients, listening to their needs, and offering advice and recommendations for framing options, so we are looking for applicants with an understanding of various frame styles and designs from different historical contexts and art movements. This is a hands-on position and requires someone who has knowledge of archival framing techniques and is able to hand-cut custom mats, fabricate French and fabric-wrapped mats, perform custom hinging, and frame and fit all manner of objects into their housing. The ideal candidate will work effectively with colleagues, clients and vendors to meet scheduled deadlines. A positive attitude, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment are all essential for success.

Responsibilities

o Supervise the Custom Framing and Display Department staff member(s) and oversee the department’s quality control.

o Responsible for examining and estimating projects as they come into the facility.

o Manage the department schedule with the production manager.

o Track departmental supplies and keep materials updated, including frame orders.

o Responsible for meeting with clients as needed and offering advice and recommendations for framing options appropriate for the artwork being framed.

o Coordinate with all other conservation departments to ensure timely completion of projects.

o Fit new custom frames and re-fit existing frames for all paintings.

o Perform archival mounting, framing, and hinging of all works of art on paper.

o Design and fabrication of French and linen/silk-wrapped mats.

o Work with The Conservation Center’s mount maker to design custom mounts, vitrines, and stands for three-dimensional objects and books.

Requirements

o Thorough knowledge of archival framing techniques and experience in a high-end framing environment is required.

o The candidate must be able to fit custom frames, re-fit frames for paintings, perform custom hinging, hand-cut matting, frame works of art on paper, and fit objects in acrylic vitrines.

o Demonstrate understanding of various frame styles and framing designs that align with the historical context of different art movements.

o The candidate must also be able to fabricate French and fabric-wrapped mats and install fillets.

o The candidate must be organized and able to track departmental supplies, update materials when necessary, and accurately track and locate items using the company’s database.

o Art handling, packing, and installation experience are a plus.

o Customer service experience is a plus, as the position requires meeting with clients to choose framing options as needed.

o A positive attitude, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment are all essential.

o Some travel may be required for emergency disaster response and local on-site installations. Travel may be required at short notice and is on an as-needed basis.
