The Senior Manager of Lifelong Learning conceives initiatives and strategies to expand the ways in which adult learners engage with the Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) as a site for wellbeing, connectivity, and expansive language learning. Through programming, resources, and methodology with CMOA’s strategic framework and goals.

The Senior Manager of Lifelong Learning collaborates on development and implementation of the museum’s goal of community centered practice which cultivates resources, methodologies, and mediation to engage multiple publics with the relationships between artwork, artists, publics, our neighborhoods, and the world.

This position operationally and programmatically expands the Carnegie Museum of Art as a destination and resource for lifelong art-centered learning for adults with a multitude of life paths.

The position designs, oversees, manages, and sets standards for the implementation and evaluation of the museum’s engagement and outreach programs for post-secondary school adults as well as cultivates and maintains relationships with related internal and external constituents.

This position leverages museum-based learning expertise to develop, iterate, and share engagement strategies, tactics, and programs and single-visit experiences to longer-term collaborative and co-creation partnerships to position the museum as a shared space that cultivates curiosity, social and emotional growth, connectedness, and as a site for organizing and developing ideas while building community.

The Senior Manager of Lifelong Learning develops and manages initiatives that connect museum-based empathy centered learning with the museum’s docent program, professional studies programs, and ongoing professional development in organizations and businesses to complement existing curriculum and workplace training programs.

Additionally, this position creates program specific budgets in line with operating and restricted budgets; and evaluates mission-driven outcomes and financial objectives.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

*Conceives, plans, and implements initiatives and strategy that integrate ongoing compassion based human development and wellbeing into the everyday museum experience as well as ongoing professional development, enrichment programs, and engagement resources for adults to center the museum as an ongoing touch point for lifelong learning and social connectivity.

*Develop museum-based programming and outreach initiatives that provide responsive and expansive entry points to activating the museum’s collection and exhibition. Programming must be cross disciplinary and multimodal self-directed continued learning, and engages an expansive public, while utilizing art as a language for ongoing development of social, emotional, creative, and critical empathy skills.

*Develop guided museum tours experiences that connect everyday lived experiences, presents challenging questions, and brings wonder to the museum’s collection and exhibitions.

*Cultivate the volunteer museum docent program, by supporting the teaching and learning community of over 60 volunteer docents while developing training and learning opportunities that utilize their lived experience while expanding cultural references and practices in engaging with social, economic, and political difference.

*Facilitate collaborative planning and program design and staff training on initiatives with internal and external stakeholders.

*Develop applicable evaluation framework, evaluation plans, and ensure that evaluation and all objectives related to collaborative partnerships are achieved.

*Research and design programming in the strategic focus areas of museum as site for language learning and museum as site for wellbeing.

*With appropriate colleagues, create content and engagement strategies for adult museum visitors and groups work closely with Group *Visits office and Visitor Services to ensure smooth booking and front-of-house implementation of adult visitor engagement; and troubleshoot as needed.

*Hire, train, mentor, and evaluate department staff and docents and arts educators and adult learning programs; establish training protocols and ensure pedagogical excellence; nurture a positive and motivating relationship with the team ensuring that programs meet museum goals and standards for creative excellence, innovation, mission, and impact.

*Develop and scale special initiatives such as the Professional Learning Program that activates museum-based learning as praxis for building empathic practice for medical students and professionals.

*Work to shift revenue centers from cost per person to institution-to-institution support.

*Create program budgets, review budget performance, and make appropriate course corrections; develop impactful systems for tracking, data analysis and reporting on performance of student programs related to mission, attendance, impact, and financial goals.

*Stay abreast of newest developments in museum education best practices especially regarding adult engagement; participate in regional and national conferences and research activities in these areas keeping CMOA at the leading edge of art museum education; and actively participate in the Pittsburgh-area connected learning community.

*Contribute to CMOA and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh collaborative strategic visioning and educational initiatives as appropriate and requested.

*Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in art, fine arts, education, art history, museum education, or a related field and 5+ years of experience in a museum education position as well as demonstrated continued professional development in the museum-based learning field.

A comparable mix of education and experience will be considered.

Candidates must have experience in a professional role focusing on engaging adults diverse in age and cultural experiences; project design and management; experience managing departmental efforts; experience managing staff and volunteers; have knowledge of art history and object, inquiry, and dialogical based museum learning.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Must be a self-directed, creative, and innovative thinker with demonstrated knowledge of expansive, accessible, and multiform teaching and learning in art museums and museum education.

Demonstrated research and practice in connecting contemporary social, political, everyday life questions with art and art learning.

A demonstrated proactive praxis of values related to equity and inclusion is required.

Strong interpersonal, management, written, analytical and verbal communication skills are required.

Must thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment and synthesize both institutional and partner needs, create and maintain systems of program evaluations and perform data analysis that translate to programmatic strategy, develop and adhere to project goals, deadlines, and budgets while aligning them to long term museum wide goals and values.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The position requires some occasions that involve moving around museum spaces for up to 3–4 hours at a time and transporting art materials up to 25 lbs. to program areas.

Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle with the ability to travel independently to school locations throughout western Pennsylvania with art materials.
