The Brooklyn Rail is looking for our next Social Media Associate.
The Social Media Associate drives our strategy for growing and connecting our international, online community with the content of the Rail, and is an integral part of taking the Rail to the next level in our 20th year of publication. You would join a staff of ten full time employees, who work with a small production team, over two dozen editors, as well as the hundreds of writers and contributors in each issue.
The Social Media Associate maintains the Rail’s presence across Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook, keeping our global audience of art-makers and art-lovers informed about what we’re publishing and what’s going on in our community of artists, writers and thinkers, and ensures that our social media presence reflects the diversity of voices in our community.
The successful candidate is someone who loves looking at art and is familiar with NYC mainstream & alternative art institutions. You keep up with international current events and seek artistic and intellectual growth. You understand the importance of the broad range of disciplines covered in the Rail and believe in the potential for art to affect broad social change.
Plan and execute daily, weekly and monthly social media campaigns on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter including writing captions, tagging correctly
Produce weekly medium length video content for IGTV/YouTube, in collaboration with artists & critics, and by drawing upon Rail archive, such as New Social Environment event series
Drive growth of audience across our platforms using analytics to provide monthly reports to the Publisher, Managing Director & Board
Consume the content of the Brooklyn Rail through reading the journal & attending events to keep a pulse on the community
Partner with our Advertising Director to ensure sponsorships & store products are correctly represented and supported by our online presence
Make site visits & attend events to capture footage (as is safe and necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic)
Be a good Rail citizen, a present member of the community who spearheads projects, events and lends a hand when needed to run the non-profit
Qualifications
Has passion for the mission of the Rail with a strong commitment to supporting artists and diverse creative individuals across New York City
Demonstrates a deep love for community & healthy respect for the internet
Able to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and prioritize tasks across short and long term projects
Is a skilled reader and writer, able to synthesize long articles into bite-sized, engaging captions
Has a positive attitude and temperament, with strong ability to function well when under deadline pressure
Has a sensitivity to and appreciation for the artist’s struggle as well as the complexity of representing many varied voices through one organizational umbrella
Is comfortable managing processes involving many different people with different backgrounds and knowledge
Skills
Demonstrates expert understanding of Instagram, Facebook, YouTube & Twitter platforms
Is a rigorous fact-checker and self-editor
Is an experienced image researcher, able to identify compelling images
Has fluent working knowledge of Adobe Suite, including video editing
Has basic knowledge of art history
Our team strives for open communication in the office and on our Slack. We openly collaborate on work over Google Docs, Google Drive, and 1Password.
Contract & Compensation
This is a full time salaried position. Candidates must be able to commit to at least a 2 years term, with an option to extend. You must be based in the NYC area, or be willing to relocate post pandemic.
