Under the direction of the model shop manager, the shop supervisor is responsible for managing the shop instructors and tool crib staff, organizing shop demos/training, maintaining a safe work environment for students, faculty and staff, ensuring that safety and dress codes are met in accordance with established ArtCenter Shop policies; keeping the shop inventory stocked, and ordering items when needed. This position will oversee the south campus shop.

Responsibilities

Shop Operations — 75%

  • Under minimal supervision, provide daily guidance and day-to-day directions and assistance to Model Shop and Tool Crib staff, including but not limited to hiring, orientation, training and supervision of department staff; assisting with the performance evaluation process; ensuring consistent use of all applicable policies and procedures; applying performance management for improved performance

  • Receive and track faculty, student and employee issues and resolve problems

  • Stay current on all safety and shop practices and procedures

  • Attend all assigned EHS training and ensure staff attends assigned EHS training

  • Responsible for hazardous waste management including attending state required training, hazardous waste storage area, signing of hazardous waste manifests and scheduling hazardous waste pick-ups

  • Delegate and assign tasks to shop instructors and student workers

  • Ensure purchase orders for all shop supplies in both resale and expendables are in order

  • Field questions from students on materials and procedures while guiding them safely on the use of all Model Shop tools and equipment

  • Provide customer service and retail point-of sale transactions

  • Contact equipment manufacturers to resupply the consumable materials for the machines in use; arrange purchase orders for materials supplied by other vendors

  • Scheduling of employees for shifts and ensuring shop coverage

  • Ensure that work orders are carried out and completed, per instructor or student requests

  • Manage and restock inventory items for point-of-sale and the shop material usage

  • Ensure that the shop is well stocked and operating at a level meeting expectations of students and instructors

  • Apply names and numbers to tools and enter them in web checkout system

Shop Safety — 20%

  • Maintain a safe work environment throughout the department

  • Hazardous waste management and inspections

  • Comply with and ensure that safety and dress codes are carried out in accordance with shop policies, including wearing assigned PPE and ensure staff compliance

  • Attend required training sessions on assigned PPE provided by the College

  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment inside rooms and labs

  • Monitor and maintain shop tools in accordance to safety and maintenance standards

Non-Essential — 5%

  • Other related duties, as may be assigned

  • May assist other labs as needed

Requirements
  • Minimum 3 – 5 years of previous supervisory experience

  • Proficient with power tools, table saws, and other wood and metal shop equipment and machines

  • Experience working with various metals and metalworking tools including MIG, TIG, Oxy Acetylene, Plasma Cutting, heat and cold bending, etc. Able to give extensive safety demonstrations of metal working tools and processes

  • Ability to function and perform effectively as a supervisor to address employee issues with constructive feedback and coaching

  • Experience with customer service and conflict resolution

  • Knowledge of safety procedures on the use and maintenance of equipment, tools and components

  • Must be a self-starter, and able to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner and ability to multi-task

  • Ability to maintain a pleasant disposition and the ability to remain calm under pressure while working with staff, students, and faculty

  • Available to work overtime, weeknights and weekends to cover shifts as needed

  • Ability to restock inventory items and order supplies as needed

  • Ability to use computers and cash register

  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff with varying degrees of skills and backgrounds
