The National Gallery attracts over 5.5 million visitors a year and its collection of over 2300 Western European paintings is one of the richest and most comprehensive in the world.

As an Art Handling Team Supervisor, you will be responsible on a daily basis for supervising the main art handling team in its role. This includes supervision of the team in all aspects of art movement, installation and preparation of the collection within the National Gallery. You will be required to act as deputy to a Senior Technician on specific projects, including exhibition installations and major collection rehangs. This includes working with the Senior Technician on any advance planning required and representing them and the department in planning meetings and installations as designated.

Responsibilities

You will assist both the Senior Technician and the Head of Department in the planning and execution of any Art Handling training programs and will be responsible on a daily basis for ensuring and promoting the standards of the department through the main team.

You will play an active role in the continued development of the department`s equipment and processes design program. This may include promoting and developing your own projects in association with a Senior Technician or the Head of Department.

You will represent the Gallery externally, both as a courier and in the promotion of the Departments work.

Though you will not have direct line management responsibilities, your supervisory role means that you will assist the Senior Technician in the assessment of the main team, advising as appropriate.

Requirements
  • Ability to demonstrate strong technical knowledge of moving and installing a variety of artworks.
