The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County is seeking an Exhibition Technician. This position will be participating in exhibition projects related to fabrication, installation, and maintenance of exhibitions. It is an exciting time as we embark new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with LA.
Execute installation, de-installation, and maintenance of museum exhibits.
Perform cleaning, maintenance, and repair of exhibits.
Crate, pack, and store exhibit related materials.
Works on the fabrication and construction of exhibit components and accessory materials.
Assists in maintain equipment and supplies, keeping storage and work spaces clean, and ordering of materials.
Participates in collaborative development of exhibition parks.
May handle objects and specimens for the Museum collection, as well as material from lending institutions.
Assists Lighting and Media team with maintaining lighting, A/V, and mechanical components of exhibits.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in art, science, or media field from an accredited college, or equivalent work experience.
Two+ years of related work experience, preferably in a museum environment.
Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Must be comfortable operating and maintaining hand tools and power tools including: hammer, screwdriver, ratcheting wrench, chisel, utility knife, pry bar, drill gun, chop saw, hand router, band saw, drill press, and belt sander.
Functional math skills to perform precise measuring and calculate estimated materials needed for fabrication projects.
Physical strength, stamina, and ability to use proper lifting techniques to lift up to 75 pounds.
Must be detail oriented, have good hand-eye coordination for performing precise tasks and good eyesight for noticing detail.
Functional computer skills for using Microsoft Office, G Suite (reading and responding to email, using group calendars, using shared drives to access files, creating spreadsheets). Must be able to open, print, and read files sent in formats such as Adobe InDesign and Google SketchUp.
Must be able to work collaboratively and respectfully in a team environment.
