The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks a qualified Lead Preparator for Lighting. Reporting to the Head of Preparations, the Lead Preparator is responsible for all gallery lighting of muesum exhibitions and permanent collection, oversees scheduling and maintenance of all lighting, louver, and gallery shade operations, and maintains lighting fixtures, equipment, and inventories of lamps and accessories. The Lead Preparator suprvises a Preparator whose time is split between installation and gallery lighting.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees lighting and louver computer operating systems including data input

  • Oversees lighting installations for changing exhibitions and permanent collection galleries

  • Ensures that the overall appearance of gallery lighting meets required standards

  • Ensures the overall appearance of gallery lighting meets required light levels and restrictions

  • Ensures the gallery and showcase lighting are functional

  • Ensures the skylight louver and shade systems are functional

  • Maintains lighting equipment, lamp, and accessory inventories

  • Maintains daily gallery lighting schedules and special event scheduling

  • Design custom lighting solutions as needed

  • Fabricate prototypes as needed

  • Supervise and train one preparator to assist and maintain gallery lighting

  • Adapts behavior and work methods, as needed, in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles

  • Effectively handles multiple demands, shifting priorities, and rapid change

  • Builds consensus through collaboration, listens and responds appropriately to others, and asks questions and offers input for positive results

Requirements

Qualifications

  • High School/GED

  • 6+ years related experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • License to operate a variety of lifts, vehicles and forklifts

  • Basic knowledge of electricity and electrical safety

  • Advanced skills in the use of power tools, wood/metal shop machinery, and lifting apparatuses

  • Expert knowledge of best practices for art object handling and movement, installation, packing and crating

  • Competent in woodworking, cabinetry, metalworking, plastics, painting or decorative finishes, and general construction

  • Demonstrated ability to express thoughts clearly, both orally and in writing

Salaried/Hourly

  • Hourly

Targeted Hiring Range

  • $32.18 - $41.84 Hourly
