The Conservation Center in Chicago is soliciting qualified applicants to temporarily join the company’s Shipping and Transportation Department as an Associate Art Handler. This department provides professional art handling and installation, collection management and storage, packing, and shipping of art and antiques for corporations, institutions, and private clients.

Responsibilities

Responsible for art handling, crating, and storage within a warehouse environment.

Travel throughout the Chicago area in company vehicles to deliver and install works of art.

Work closely with registrars and client services team during the scheduling, intake, and return of artworks.

Prepare and accept all shipments of fine art.

Maintain client bill of landing records.

Interact with clients, including private collectors, collection managers, museum staff, and insurance representatives.

Other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required with a background in an art-related field preferred.

5+ years of preparator, art handling, or art installation experience in a museum or gallery setting required.

Must have a clean driving record.

Must be comfortable in a rapidly moving warehouse environment.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; must be able to communicate effectively with fellow team members and clients.

Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new database, time tracking, and expense reporting systems.

Must be comfortable working onsite to pack or install artworks.

Must be comfortable working in art disaster response situations where sites include structures that have suffered fires, floods, and other natural disasters, and the resulting environments, while controlled, may have varying degrees of standing water, mold, soot, etc.

Ability to travel on short notice for disaster response, including weekend and overnight hours.

Proactive in the application of new techniques and materials to improve safety for works of art, and to more effectively carry out specialized tasks.

How to Apply

This is a temporary position with the potential to become a full-time, permanent role. Both part-time and full-time applicants will be considered, and a final schedule will be determined with the selected candidate. The position requires regular travel within the Chicago area as a part of a two-person crew, and occasional travel to pick-up and delivery sites across the nation. The position also requires on-call availability for disaster response. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
