Coordinate with chief preparator in the daily management of all phases of work for the Preparation Department including supervision of on-call staff and contractors. manage the safe handling, storage, and movement of incoming and outgoing art. Coordinate the design, construction, and finishing of all crates, packing boxes, housing and related of art for storage and transport. oversee art pickups, deliveries, and installations at donor, lender, and off-site locations.
Design, construct, and finish crates, packing boxes, travel frames, exhibition pedestals, display casework, storage mounts, and related storage furniture for museum artwork.
Provide support and assistance with scheduling and arranging the pickup and delivery of artwork with the museum van or straight truck from donor, lender and off-site storage locations.
Assess appropriate packing materials and labor required for art pickups and deliveries. Secure and safely load and offload artwork from the museum or contracted vehicles.
Unpack and repack all incoming and outgoing artwork, document related crate and packing materials and methods, and assist with the safe movement of artwork within the museum between storage locations, conservation, the photography lab, and galleries and to and from off-site storage locations.
Support the Registrars office in the planning and preparation of the Outoing Loan Program. Oversee the schedule of crating and packing of outgoing loans. Track crating and packing estimates, site visits by contractors, deliveries, and invoicing. Advise on safe packing of incoming loans. Attend bi-monthly Outgoing Loan Committee Meetings.
Install, deinstall, and stage artwork and related display furniture for gallery installations and maintain related inventory lists and database location updates.
Oversee unpacking and repacking of exhibition loans, maintain thorough packing and crating notes and documentation, interface with couriers to adhere to packing and handling requirements.
Make adjustments to the packing of loans for future travel, and maintain storage of empty crates on and off-site, including labeling, tracking and other record keeping.
Work with traveling exhibition Registrars to make crating arrangements for DAM traveling exhibitions. Prepare estimates for budget and space planning purposes based on traveling exhibition checklists. Coordinate with contractors to prepare estimates and plan site visits.
Work closely with Collections Management department on the construction of travel frames, skeleton crates, pallets, and other large-scale collections storage furniture, assist with collection moves, collections rehousing, art and art furniture movement, inventories, location updates, and other projects as assigned.
Conduct condition reports on incoming and outgoing artwork or works going on and off display and undertake data entry of artwork condition, measurements, location, and related crate, packing, installation, handling, and storage information on museums collections database. Use database to manage lists for current and future projects.
Manage storage and inventory of loan crates, travel frames and related packing materials.
Maintain packing department materials inventory and order woodshop, crate, packing, exhibition, and storage-related supplies as required using standard accounting procedures and paperwork.
Frame, unframe, and install hanging hardware on artwork as required
Maintain cleanliness of the museums packing area, wood shop and related work areas
Other exhibitions and collections services duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills And Ability
Knowledge and experience with materials and methods for the safe packing and handling of artwork
Must be able to operate van and 20 straight truck
Must possess valid Colorado drivers license
Knowledge and experience of collections management and art handling best practices
Knowledge and experience of carpentry shop equipment, safety standards, and wide range of related hand tools required.
Skill in safe use of forklifts and scissor lifts
Strong computer skills in PC based applications and databases

Education or Formal Training
- Bachelor of Arts with a focus on Studio Arts, Art History or related.
Experience
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience working as a preparator in a Museum environment. Carpentry, woodworking, and painting experience required. Must demonstrate a high level of skill in crate design, fabrication and outfitting, art handling and packing, and art installation.
