The Preparator assists the Collections Management staff in maintaining galleries and exhibitions, and in the installation, moving, packing, shipping and care of the Museum’s collections.

Responsibilities
  • With other members of the team, maintains the appearance and safety of collections in all Museum galleries, exhibitions and storage facilities, and conducts daily inspections of galleries, cases, and object positions.

  • Assists in the preparation, installation and changing of exhibitions and displays.

  • Assists in the moving of glass within the Museum and records associated location changes for Registration.

  • Unpacks objects received at the Museum and/or offsite, and packs objects to be shipped.

  • Assists in changing case lighting as needed.

  • Assists with the periodic cleaning and inventories of the galleries and collections storage areas.

  • Assists in preparation and installation of labels for exhibits and matting of display materials.

  • Numbers collection objects after numbers are assigned by Registration.

  • Couriers objects as required.

  • Assists with other tasks as assigned.

  • Supports and amplifies the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Requirements
  • Minimum five years of experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Object handling and movement

  • Mount making

  • Rigging

  • Packing

  • Electrical

  • Matting and framing

  • Operation of powered lifts

  • Associates degree required; Bachelor’s degree desired.

  • Ability to handle and pack glass objects with care.

  • Ability to work independently and equally as a member of a team.

  • Ability to work accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Ability to handle high stress situations in a calm manner.

  • General familiarity with computers and software including Microsoft Office suite.

  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs. and work on ladders and lifts.

  • Knowledge of Art History desired; experience in a museum setting preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as necessary.

  • Some weekends and evenings required; flexibility in hours necessary.
