This is the #2 position in a small but growing custom framing business whose clients include blue chip galleries, art museums and prominent artists. The occupant of this position will produce and assemble finished/closed-corner frames for fine art clients from start to finish including fabrication, sanding and finishing, hinging and mounting and fitting alongside the owner and founder of the company. The Framing Production Associate will be able to identify areas for improvement in production management and make recommendations, as well as participate in research and development of new techniques for production and strategies for increasing sales. Read a ruler and measuring tape accurately and think in 1/32inch fractions
Handle artworks and frame components with care
Hinge a variety of works on paper and fit a variety of frames of different sizes
Prepare Jin-Shofu wheatpaste
Use shop machines and power tools including chop saw, table saw, power sanders, and cordless drills
Use specialized shop and hand tools including Morso mitre guillotine and Festool Domino joiner
Execute basic wood joints used in framing including mitres, lap joints, mortise and tenon and splined mitres
Finely sand and finish wood with hand-applied finishes
Cut mat board and plastics on wall-mounted cutter
Drive to suppliers and subcontractors
Review inventory
Fill out new order forms
Input information into spreadsheets to generate quotes
Order materials from vendors
Receive deliveries
Maintain close attention to detail while engaged in repetitive tasks
Perform tasks with minimal direction and observation
Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
Demonstrate good time management
Keep personal workspace clean and organized and help with overall facility upkeep
Assist in studio improvements
Participate in the hiring and managing of assistants
Run the studio in the absence of the owner
Participate in research and development of new techniques for production and strategies for increasing sales

Required Experience and Education:
Two (2) years of experience in paper preparation at an art museum, a high-quality finished/closed corner framing studio, or paper conservation studio. Bachelor’s degree with specific coursework in art, experience in art handling, wood working, book-making, print-making, or photography.
