We are partnered with a blue-chip gallery who are seeking an experienced Art Handler/Preparator to join their expanding team in New York.

The successful candidate will be responsible for reporting to the Senior Technician and working under their guidance to ensure the safe and proper handling, packing, condition checks, and installation of all artwork pieces within galleries, client houses, and art fairs.

Responsibilities
  • Handling and installations of all artworks including paintings, sculptures, design objects, or digital media

  • Ensure the artwork is prepared for exhibitions, art fairs, photography, loans, or viewing rooms

  • Ensure all artwork is catalogued into the gallery database and is constantly kept up to date and accurate

  • Perform condition checks on a variety of artwork

  • Work alongside the Registrar team to ensure accurate record collections and deliveries of artworks on-site and off-site

  • Ensure condition checks and packing is completed to a high standard to prepare the artwork for local and international shipping

  • Assist the Facilities Manager with the upkeep of the gallery and viewing rooms

  • Provide offsite support for client services, site visits, photography, and art fairs

  • Ensure that any storage rooms are organized

  • Organize the tools and supply areas

  • Assist with annual inventories of all artworks within the gallery and within local storage locations

  • Ensure other ad hoc tasks or projects are completed when required

Requirements
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in art handling within a gallery, museum setting, or auction house including shipping, handling, packing, and storage of artworks

  • Demonstrate excellent knowledge of the best practices and materials for handling and packing the artwork

  • Show a diverse understanding and skill set for installing a wide range of different artworks

  • Show the ability to work in a face-paced environment by remaining organized

  • Willingness to learn

  • Demonstrate troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to lift and move any heavy objects when required

  • Have previous experience working with in-house databases and condition-checking software

  • Demonstrate exceptional communication skills both verbal and written

  • Have exceptional attention to detail

  • Hold a valid driver’s license
