Join our Canal Convergence Art Installation Crew and play a key role in installing (and later de-installing) large-scale, light-based public artworks for our 10-night annual event in early November!

Responsibilities

Here is what you will get to do:

SUMMARY

Performs tasks for the installation and de-installation of large-scale, light-based temporary public artworks for the 10-night public art event, Canal Convergence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Under direction of supervisor)

  1. Performs a variety of functions related to unpacking, installing, deinstalling, and repacking artwork and general event set-up for light-based public art event, Canal Convergence. Canal Convergence occurs annually over 10 days in early November. The artwork installation typically takes place during the 10-12 days prior to the event start date, and the deinstallation takes place over 5-7 days immediately following the final day of the event, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (1-hour unpaid lunch break), including weekends. The right candidate must be available for at least one third (non-consecutive) of the total max. amount of the listed working days, but more is preferred.

  2. Canal Convergence installation duties will include, but are not limited to, working directly under the installation team leads providing assistance for installing sculptures, truss, rigging, scaffolding, signage, artwork-related technology (projectors, computers, etc.) and any other physical components required for the successful installation of the artwork.

  3. Other on-site duties may include, but are not limited to, loading and unloading of trucks/vehicles, painting, use of hand tools, use of power tools, and other duties as needed.

  4. Must adhere to all on-site safety rules and regulations.

  5. Upon completion of on-site water safety training, work in close proximity to the Arizona Canal, and may be required to do work on the water via SRP-approved floats.

  6. Working nearby and with heavy equipment is required.

  7. Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

Here is what you will need to be successful:

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required, higher education and/or vocational training in a related field preferred.

  2. Experience: 1 – 2 years of experience and/or training related to the field. Experience in art handling/installation, event production, carpentry, or construction is desired. A technical background and comprehensive knowledge of structural plans are also desired.

  3. Attributes:

  • Ability to interpret documents such as safety rules, operation, maintenance, instruction and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to work outdoors throughout the entire work shift.

  • Must be able to perform math functions, interpret graphs, sites and maps as needed for duties.

  • Demonstrated aptitude to apply common sense understanding and to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.

  • Able to problem-solve and troubleshoot issues in a concise fashion.

  • Know how to swim (due to working in close proximity of, or on the Arizona Canal).

  • Knowledge of basic hand tools.

  1. Work Environment: Works outside in inclement weather frequently. Employees are regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel. Required to stand on a frequent basis; walking, sitting as part of daily function. Must be able to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Must be able to lift/move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for the position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work at heights over 8 feet and occasionally work on the canal (waterway in boats or pontoons). Exposure to moving mechanisms, high, precarious places, and water depths in close proximity to work area. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

  2. Other requirements:

  • Must possess valid driver’s license and driving record which is acceptable to the organization’s insurance carrier.

  • Must be 21 years of age or older

  • Forklift and aerial lift training and Certification are preferred.

  • Water Safety Training required during the first 6 months. (Training provided by Scottsdale Arts/SRP)
