Art Instructors are responsible for planning and leading art studio experiences for all ages and abilities in a variety of program settings. Programs are inspired by the Museum’s collection and exhibitions. The Art Instructors will teach classes to families, preschool students, children, teens, and adults, and also assist with classes taught by contracted teaching artists. Programs include drop-in art making, one-day workshops, summer camps, studio series for adults, figure drawing and children’s classes, and may be scheduled for weekdays, evenings and/or weekends or off site.

Art Instructors will assist in planning hands-on activities for Museum-wide programs such as Family Days, Preschool Playdates, multi-generational events, adult parties, Teen Nights and College Nights. In addition Art Instructors will assist in planning, staffing and maintaining The Studio, organizing art supply storage, prepping materials, and will work on other education projects as needed.

The candidate will be a practicing artist, and experienced studio arts instructor with knowledge and skill in a variety of two- and three-dimensional media. The position requires the ability to communicate concisely and work cooperatively as part of a dynamic team of educators. This is a Full Time position, with a varying schedule based on the Museum’s programming. Art Instructors report to the Assistant Manager of Youth and Family Programs in the division of Education.

  • Work closely with Museum education staff to create lesson plans for museum programs based on themes, artwork, program format and audience

  • Deliver programs, teaching classes in the studios or off-site from 1-5 hours in length; studio classes will generally include gallery time for discussion of artwork

  • Provide a welcoming presence and engaging activities in The Studio

  • Assist with other educational projects as needed, to include management of art supplies, materials prep, off-site festivals, community events, access programming and program evaluation.

  • Provide written plans and outlines for education staff collaboration, review, and approval

  • Prepare thorough materials lists in advance of program; be familiar with museum supplies, materials and equipment on-hand

  • Execute everything needed for program preparation, presentation, clean-up, and post-program assessment

  • Work with education staff, interns, and/or volunteer assistants during programs



Education, Training, Traits:

  • Practicing artist with formal education in studio arts required; BFA or MFA preferred

  • Coursework in art history, American art in particular, preferred

  • Coursework and interest in art education trends and pedagogy preferred

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of two years’ experience teaching art in formal and/or informal settings with all ages

  • Experience with architecture and/or nature sites is very desirable

  • Experience working with collections or teaching from works of art

  • Experience with ordering and managing art materials, and their safe use

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Arkansas driver’s license with clean driving record. Willing and able to travel as needed.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends, as required

  • Demonstrated skill in a variety of two and three dimensional media

  • Outstanding classroom management skills

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • Proficiency in the use of computers for the use of email and communications, class registrations, and assessment needs

  • Experienced and effective public speaker, with outstanding customer service skills

  • Knowledge of learning styles and museum education theory and practice

  • Flexible problem-solver with passion for the visual arts

  • Ability to reflect on and modify teaching strategies to optimize learning.

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.   • Physical demands: Occasionally, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to travel independently regionally and in communities served. In the work environment described below, position requires bending and stretching for supplies, and physical stamina to lift, carry, or pull supplies weighing up to 50lbs. Vision abilities required by the job include close and distant vision. The person in this position will require the capability to move and be present in the classroom for extended periods of time and navigating through the different Museum buildings and on the trails and grounds for up to 3+hours.

  • Work environment: Work will be performed in an office environment, museum spaces, art studios, outdoors, and in the communities served. When not in the office, the employee will be spending extensive amounts of time in the Museum buildings, grounds, galleries, studios and library. Some travel is expected. The noise level in the Museum work environment is usually low to moderate, while the classroom noise level tends to be higher.
