An international blue-chip gallery in New York is seeking a motivated and experienced art technician to contribute to a dynamic team. Working in concert with registrars, exhibitions team, directors, and sales staff, the focus of this role is the safe handling, installation, and packing of artwork throughout the exhibition, viewing, and storage spaces at the gallery. Exceptional attention to detail and ability to prioritize amid a high level of volume and complexity is essential. Substantial lifting and carrying of heavy items required, as well as the use of ladders, power tools, hand tools, and material handling equipment. Offsite work and occasional travel may be required. Some overtime (paid) will be required. A positive, proactive attitude, sound judgment, and strong sense of discretion are vital. Experience in building trades, fabrication, conservation, or other technical proficiency is a plus.
Responsibilities
Safe and appropriate handling of artworks of various media
Preparation and upkeep of gallery spaces for exhibitions, viewings and photography
Maintenance of well organized art storage areas, workstations, tools, supplies
Lighting of artworks and exhibition spaces
Work with third party vendors including transportation companies, conservators, couriers, etc.
Produce and update condition reports
Coordination internally and with other departments and locations
Facilitate accurate record keeping
Supervision and direction of part time/freelance staff
Timely completion of all assigned tasks to a high standard
Requirements
BA or BFA, 3+ years of proven work experience at an art gallery, museum, artist studio or within the logistics industry
Extensive experience safely handling and packing artworks in a range of media
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Familiarity with database software
Professional demeanor
Ability to lift 50+ lbs
Ability to work safely on ladders
