The Kimbell Art Museum seeks a full-time Assistant Conservator for Paintings to aid in the conservation of its collection. The Assistant Conservator for Paintings participates in all activities of the conservation department, including, but not limited to, examining potential acquisitions, participating in the museum’s active loan program, proposing recommendations for conservation treatments, and carrying out conservation treatments following guidelines established by the American Institute of Conservation (AIC) code of ethics. This individual plays a critical role in the successful functioning of the Kimbell Art Museum’s conservation department and will liaise with other departments. Occasionally, the department collaborates with other collections in the North Texas area on conservation projects.
The Kimbell Art Museum, owned and operated by the Kimbell Art Foundation, is internationally renowned for both its collections and its architecture. The Kimbell’s collections range in period from antiquity to the 20th century and include European masterpieces by artists such as Fra Angelico, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Bernini, Velázquez, Monet, Cézanne, Picasso, and Matisse; important collections of Egyptian and classical antiquities; and the art of Asia, Africa, and the Ancient Americas. The museum’s 1972 building, designed by the American architect Louis I. Kahn, is widely regarded as one of the outstanding architectural achievements of the modern era. A second building, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, opened in 2013 and now provides space for special exhibitions, dedicated classrooms, and a 289-seat auditorium with excellent acoustics for music.
Responsibilities
Communicates regularly with the Chief Conservator about deadlines and workflow; assures that the highest museum standards are being followed in the care of the museum’s collections.
Examines paintings and prepares condition assessments for acquisition, loan, and treatment. Works with the Kimbell’s photographer on color correcting before- and after-treatment documentation. Prepares proposals for treatment. Carries out treatments and supplies detailed reports for those treatments.
Assists in the general operation of the painting’s conservation studio. Responds to specific questions from curators on the care of their collections.
Conducts research in the field of paintings conservation. Presents those results in the form of public lectures and publications.
Contributes to outreach initiatives in collaboration with other departments.
Acts as a courier to accompany national and international loans, as required.
Performs other duties as necessary.
Requirements
Completion of a graduate-level degree in conservation or equivalent experience, education, and training. In addition, applicants must have at least one year of post-graduate or post-training experience in paintings conservation.
Must have a broad knowledge of artist’s materials and techniques represented in the museum’s collection of paintings, as well as the materials and procedures used to conserve them. Knowledge of materials and techniques in other media is considered a plus.
Ability to work independently and successfully with other conservators, museum staff, and colleagues.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and other computing and imaging programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, is beneficial.
Must have experience in the technical study of paintings obtained through scientific analyses. Experience in X-radiography, IRR, and scanning XRF, whether in operating and/or interpretation of results, is a plus.
Knowledge of a foreign language is beneficial.
