Role Description:
The Assistant Dean of Academic and Student Affairs works closely with the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs as well as the Office of HR and the Registrar to facilitate all aspects of student onboarding including visa and residency documentation, registration and academic progress as well as provide information about essential student services. The Assistant Dean collaborates with the Offices of Residence Life and Mental Health and Counseling to support community-building and wellness programs to encourage student success. The Assistant Dean also assists in building partnerships with outside organizations that can support and, in some cases, provide treatment resources for students.
Assists the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs and The Tianjin Juilliard School Registrar develop a course schedule with an appropriate number of class sections.
Assists the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs in coordination with the Registrar with individual student academic advising including registration, adding and dropping courses; the fulfillment of graduation requirements as well as general problem-solving assistance.
Coordinates scheduling of departmental juries with the Registrar.
Provides oversight for the Office of Residence Life. Assists in drafting and disseminating policies, procedures and protocols for Residence Life.
Collaborates with the TJS Human Resources Office, Admissions and the International Affairs Office at our partner institution to collect and forward all student visa-related documents to appropriate government agencies as well as registering incoming international students with those agencies.
Works with the HR Office and with students to process documentation for student internships.
Assists with the creation, distribution and collection of course evaluations.
Assists with development of academic and student services content in online Catalog (plus interfaces with Web site, Student and Faculty Handbooks).
Serves on The Tianjin Juilliard Assessment and Care Team; the Disability Support Services Committee, and other committees as needed.
Collaborate with departments throughout the school in the planning, scheduling and implementation of an orientation program for entering students.
Works with the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, the Director of Counseling and Mental Health and the Director of Residence Life to develop student outreach programs that promote student leadership; community building; personal development; health and wellness, cultural competency; social responsibility and building a general climate of inclusion.
Assists the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs to locate, evaluate and build partnerships with local community resources to provide medical care, treatment programs and possibly counseling support to students.
Assists the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs to create and manage department budgets.
Other duties as assigned.
Bi-lingual fluency in English and Mandarin is required.
A Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education. A degree in a music-related discipline, education or student developmental services/personnel, student services, counseling, higher education administration, educational leadership or related degree is preferred.
A minimum of four (4) years of administrative experience at an accredited college or university or secondary school.
Work experience in a joint-venture Chinese/US academic program is preferred.
A deep appreciation for and preferably some educational or professional background in the arts.
A nuanced understanding of Chinese and western cultures.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, innovative thinking, technological vision, strong service orientation, energy, enthusiasm, and demonstrated ability to work well with others.
Experience and success working in a multicultural environment with a clear understanding of and sensitivity to the issues of diversity in both student and workplace settings.
Ability to exercise discretion and good judgment and maintain confidentiality.
Must communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and work successfully with all constituencies of the School.
Good project management and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated experience using a personal computer, office software such as MS Office and college administrative computing systems.
