The Contemporary Austin is hiring a part-time Assistant Preparator to support the Exhibitions Department with all areas of the installation and construction of museum galleries and outdoor exhibitions. This position requires 16-24 hours per week, and will require up to 40 hours per week during installation periods that occur approximately 8-12 weeks per year. This position is eligible for museum 401(k) plan with employer match, as well as tuition-free classes at our Art School. Pay rate: $19/hour.
Responsibilities
Work with artists and other museum staff to install and de-install exhibitions
Conduct regular exhibition checks for damage, security, and lighting
Follow installation schedule and assist in coordinating exhibitions needs with other museum departments
Pack and transport art in coordination with Registrar and lenders
Assist with crate building for works of art
Assist with construction of gallery walls and other needs
Requirements
BA in studio art or art history (preferred)
1-2 years of museum/gallery experience in art handling (required)
Experience working with artists (required)
Experience in installation, exhibition coordination (preferred)
Photoshop, Sketch-Up experience (preferred)
Flexibility to work in a fast-paced, changing environment
Good communication, patience, problem-solving, trouble-shooting skills
Experience with power tools and basic construction
Ability to lift and carry 75 pounds
Reliable transportation and ability to travel between job sites as needed
Valid and maintained driver’s license with clean driving record (required)
