Assistant Professor Specializing in Graphic Design

The Department of Art & Design invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor specializing in Graphic Design to begin August 16, 2023.The Department of Art & Design and the Graphic Design Area successfully equip students with skills and knowledge grounded in theory and practice. We foster a conscientious approach to art and design based on critical thinking, problem solving, and technical skill. Our students are also encouraged to examine human rights and social justice through diverse and inclusive programming that includes experiential learning, community-based projects, design internships, and cross-disciplinary opportunities.
The successful candidate will have opportunities to engage in and contribute to the University of Dayton’s interdisciplinary centers for scholarship, teaching, and creative practice. For example, the Hanley Sustainability Institute supports student and faculty research, the development of sustainability curriculum, and sustainability initiatives in the greater Dayton community. The Human Rights Center supports global initiatives and justice-oriented solutions through education, research, and advocacy. The Fitz Center for Leadership In Community maintains relationships with local neighborhoods, non-profits, and governmental agencies for community-engaged learning and teaching.

The primary responsibilities of faculty members are: teaching, research, and service. The typical teaching load is three undergraduate courses (9 credit hours) per semester in various levels of graphic design courses; Foundational level courses such as Design Processes I, Form and Concept, and upper level courses such as Typography II, Graphic Design I, II and III. Internal grant opportunities and additional department funding is available to assist faculty in their creative practice with the goals of peer-reviewed research. These avenues include: publications, exhibitions, awards/honors, contribution to the professional field and interdisciplinary research. Service to the department, college, university, profession, and/or community is expected.
MFA in Graphic Design/Visual Communication Design, MDes, MGD or an equivalent degree in design or an international equivalent degree in design, nearing completion
Knowledge of contemporary design issues, concepts, methodologies, and technologies
Research within graphic design
Potential for excellence in teaching
Effective written communication skills
Articulated commitment to breadth of education including educating the whole person in the
Marianist tradition to support inclusive excellence and the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
