Associate Director of Exhibition Management and Design

Museum of the Moving Image seeks an Associate Director of Exhibition Management and Design. This position reports to the Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs, and on a daily basis works closely with and supervises the Manager of Exhibitions/Chief Preparator and Graphic Designer. The Associate Director of Exhibitions Management and Design is a critical part of the team responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of all changing exhibitions and installations, and other special projects both in the Museums public spaces and online, as well as management of the Museum’s ongoing exhibitions, Behind the Screen and The Jim Henson Exhibition, and any traveling exhibitions.
The ideal candidate will have great organizational, management, and design skills, a creative approach to problem-solving, and enthusiasm for working collaboratively across departments.
Duties include:
Working with the Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs to maintain exhibition schedules and budgets, and to coordinate all practical arrangements for each exhibition, including coordination of any legal agreements, development of exhibition floor plans and elevations, sourcing and acquiring estimates, acquisition and maintenance of supplies including any AV equipment or other digitally-based assets, travel and accommodation for exhibition partners, and coordination of photography, press previews, opening reception, and exhibition-based member events
Oversee the daily management of the Museum’s traveling exhibitions, including daily correspondence and requests from hosting venues, as well as promotions and future bookings, and coordinating the installation and de-installation at hosting venues, while working with the Museum’s registrar to confirm all transport, temporary storage, and all other activities are realized on time and on budget
Oversee, and work closely with, the Manager of Exhibitions/Chief Preparator in the daily check-in and maintenance of all exhibitions, and in the planning and implementation of any exhibition updates and installations, including special staffing required for exhibitions and site-specific installations
Manage collaborations with outside exhibition designers
Serve as a backup to the Manager of Exhibition/Chief Preparator, assuming all his/her daily tasks and duties when absent
Working closely with the museum’s curatorial team, and with guest curators, for each project as required, with a focus on maintaining accurate documents required by various stakeholders, and assuring all appropriate standards are being upheld in the execution
Working closely with the Registrar on arrangements for shipping and any conservation, framing, or other object preparation required for exhibition
Working with the Graphic Designer, oversee the production of exhibition-related graphics and publications as required, from the initial press release to all exhibition content, including facilitating proof-reading, fact checking, and any other editorial requirements for each specific project
Ensure that other relevant staff members are informed of specific needs and activities required, and that all museum staff are properly informed of relevant activities happening during exhibition development, installation, opening events, and de-installation at the end of the exhibition’s run, and that the Museum’s exhibition schedule is always up-to-date
Liaise with other departments, external partners, artists, and curators as required for each project
Liaise with publicity and marketing individuals for all exhibitions and online publications
Manage the production of reports, presentations, and proposals, as required for funding requests, and for the management of funds already allocated, when and as required
Manage logistics of special projects, including one-time, or one weekend, events or special installations
Education, Experience, and Qualifications Required:
Undergraduate degree and a minimum of 5 years experience in a related field.
Demonstrated experience designing and implementing exhibitions.
Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to represent the Museum at meetings and briefings with New York City agencies and officials.
Experience and familiarity with best practices related to art/object handling, installation, and conservation.
Leadership balanced with the ability to collaborate in a team context, and to simultaneously manage multiple projects with individual set schedules and budgets.
Ability to work irregular schedules, including weekends, evenings and holidays when required, for exhibition installations or other exhibition-related activities and events.
Knowledge of relevant software, such as InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, -After Effects, Word, Excel, Power Point, and Acrobat.
Experience, or familiarity with, AV production processes, as well as specification, application, and installation of related equipment.
Experience with software such as CAD (Vectorworks), Flash, and HTML a plus.

The employee must be comfortable climbing different types of ladders, at varying heights, and using other types of lift equipment (such as a hydraulic Genie Lift) for the installation and/or maintenance of artifacts and installations, as well as the maintenance of lighting and AV systems (often housed in ceiling areas), in the Museum’s galleries.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
