Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Head Preparator (Temporary) for Express Newark which will report to the Gallery Director.

The Paul Robeson Galleries/Express Newark (PRG/EN) operates a network of exhibition spaces across campus, and numerous associated exhibitions and public programs.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for overseeing the installation, deinstallation and general movement and care of artworks under the jurisdiction of the PRG/EN.

  • Responsible for seeking suppliers and service providers to facilitate the presentation of art for the PRG/EN.

  • Position Status: Full Time

  • Terms of Appointment: Temporary Staff Appointment - Salaried 12 Month

Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Requires up to two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.A./B.F.A preferred.

  • Driver license and hydraulic crane experience.

  • Experience with exhibition lighting highly desirable.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Essential to have extensive experience in art handling and/or technician and/or preparator work in the arts industry at acceptable venues (with equal/equivalent international museum standards of art management), at least five years.

  • Experience leading/managing exhibition installation team to achieve professional results.

  • Attention to all details involving artworks and their management, storage and display.

  • Experience in framing, matting and mounting artworks.

Equipment Utilized

  • Word processing, Excel, Photoshop, Illustrator, Outlook and museum collections management software.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift at least 75 pounds and not be averse to heights.

  • Must be able to remain calm under pressure, work to tight deadlines, and work efficiently with contemporary artists and arts professionals.
