The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (AAM) is one of the premier fine arts museums in the San Francisco Bay Area, and one of the largest in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. With a collection of over 18,000 artworks spanning 6,000 years, it offers one of the world’s most striking and complete presentations of Asian art. As Asia’s prominence on the global stage continues to grow, the AAM’s mission, collections, and geographic location uniquely position it to spark connections across cultures and through time, igniting curiosity, conversation, and creativity.

The AAM has embarked on a major multi-year effort to transform the Museum and will invest significantly over the coming decade in a new portfolio of programs, exhibitions, and visitor experience enhancements, as well as expanded facilities that increase its ability to achieve its brand promise – awaken the past, inspire the next. Construction is wrapping up on the centerpiece of this transformation: a new, 13,000-square-foot exhibition Pavilion and Art Terrace. Designed by architect Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY Architecture, the Pavilion will allow the Museum to increase the number of temporary exhibitions offered each year and create dedicated spaces for contemporary art experiences. The Art Terrace will provide 7,300 square feet of outdoor space for art, live performances, and other special events throughout the day and evening. The transformation will also facilitate new approaches to displaying masterpieces in the Museum’s collection galleries, upgrade education classrooms, and employ new digital technologies for enhanced interpretation.

The Pavilion opening is planned for early 2020 and represents a critical and opportune moment to reintroduce the public to the Asian Art Museum. Delivering a rich and exciting visitor experience that fully enlivens the brand will solidify the platform for future engagement and audience diversity. The Chief Financial Officer is a key leader in supporting all efforts across the Museum to ensure the successful opening and set the stage for future growth.

  • Serving as the lead on planning and implementing the annual institutional priorities, KPIs, budgeting process for City and consolidated budgets, and all approvals;

  • Creating and presenting quarterly and year-end financials and describe use of the Board reserve to various audiences including Executive Board, Finance Committee, Audit Committee, and Museum staff;

  • Developing the financial model for the strategic plan and annual updates, working to achieve a balance among earned and contributed revenues, City allocations and endowment support for the institution;

  • Reviewing all formal finance, payroll, and IT related procedures to ensure compliance with all city, state and federal laws and ordinances;

  • Working closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer and Development team to build the Museum’s Contributed Revenue and Campaign;

  • Directing the Museum’s accounting and financial operations, overseeing financial forecasting and projections, and directing the development and administration of complex budgets encompassing public and private funding sources;

  • Serving as an advisor/partner to the Museum Director/ CEO in strategizing all museum’s operations. Proactive in evaluating the Museums’ operational situation and identifying solutions on timely basis.

  • Establishing and maintaining accounting control over the Museum’s loan (debt) agreements and direct the analysis of debt service coverage;

  • Ensuring that all direct report department heads promote the strategic value of their departments within the Museum;

  • Overseeing the Museum’s financial audits, tax, and other regulatory filings, ensuring appropriate accounting treatment and explanation of changes in financial reports and providing reports to the Board and Board Committees;

  • Representing the Museum in all fiscal matters with governmental agencies, administrative officials, legislative bodies, and the general public in furnishing and exchanging information on complex financial, budgetary, or accounting matters; and

  • Maintaining regular contact with the Mayor’s Budget Office, Board of Supervisors, and the Office of the Controller to prepare, develop, and administer the Museum’s City budget.

Financial Acumen

The CFO will have deep experience leading finance in a complex environment. S/he will have the technical abilities and confidence to ensure that the Museum’s financial oversight is of the highest caliber. The CFO will be a strategic finance leader with the tactical ability to “deep dive” into the details with strong quantitative and analytical skills. The CFO will be able to transition seamlessly between the “big picture” and minutia. S/he will bring a high level of intellectual horsepower with a collaborative, creative, and service-oriented mindset. The CFO must have proven experience in budgeting, strategic forecasting and planning, and in overseeing financial, accounting, compliance, and risk management of a complex organization. The CFO will be skilled at presenting financial information in a clear, confident fashion to a range of constituents.

The CFO will have strong executive presence, engender confidence, and lead with intentionality. The CFO will be skilled at quickly establishing rapport and cultivating relationships across all levels of the organization. A highly articulate and a deft communicator, the CFO will easily convey the Museum’s successes and opportunities with passion and integrity in written and verbal formats in both formal and informal situations. This leader will serve as a key unifying force of the Museum’s departments, ensuring synergy amongst teams. S/he will manage the balance of Foundation and City management within the institution, with the ability to shift perspective and meet requirements across many priorities and stakeholders. S/he will exhibit strong management skills including the ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports, foster trust and collaboration among team members, and possess the ability to manage change with flexibility and poise. The CFO will be a skilled manager, equipped to build bridges across departments and sectors. S/he is an individual with unquestioned integrity, ethics and values; someone who can be trusted with highly confidential and sensitive information.
