Iowa Conservatory (ICON) is a performing and visual arts boarding high school located in the Northside Downtown District of Iowa City, Iowa. Our mission is to provide students with a safe, interdisciplinary, and holistic arts education with a focus on designing a path specific to each learner’s personal artistic goals.

At ICON, we are seeking a part-time Design and Production arts faculty member specializing in the area of costuming design.
Our arts faculty work closely with their corresponding department chair to support ICON’s productions and offer classes in their area of expertise, utilizing the design of Project-Based Learning (PBL), maintaining an organized and inspiring learning space.
All arts faculty are expected to:
Innovate and collaborate with other artists as well as students across disciplines to support successful student-led productions.
Communicate student progress with their department chair.
Be available to provide feedback to students as they progress through the program.
Refer students in their discipline/area of concentration as needed to the Student Life Team for additional support and resources.
Develop classroom expectations that are clear and consistent to build positive rapport with students and align classroom culture with ICON’s mission and values.
Foster an inclusive and equitable school environment.
Costuming Design Faculty Job Description:
Costuming Design Faculty collaborates with other instructors and students to organize, design, develop, and create costumes, makeup, wigs, puppetry, and/or masks for productions, recitals, and classes. The faculty member allocates approximately 70% time to teaching/mentoring students and 30% time designing/making costumes.

Start Date: August 14th, 2024
Hours: Half-time, 10-month position
Salary: $24,000 + paid time off package.
Options for additional stipend to work on Nolte Company productions and teach during ICON Summer Intensives.

Responsibilities
Detailed List of Job Duties:
Design and teach two sections of costume design per trimester and hold open lab time for students to work on projects.
Maintain a scope and sequence and PBL unit plans for courses taught, sharing curriculum as appropriate with the Arts Leadership Team (ALT).
Align learning content with the current National Arts Standards.
Plan differentiated activities for students to provide rigor for all unique learners, highlighting student assets and developing culturally responsive curriculum.
Attend monthly teaching faculty meetings
Participate in professional development onsite at ICON as required
Assist and collaborate with faculty, guest, and student designers in coordinating costume needs for each show.
Collaborate with Design and Production faculty in the selection of qualified and interested students for all costume production assignments including wardrobe master, junior draper, first hand, stitcher, etc.
Serve as Cutter/Draper on all school shows.
Organize, schedule, manage, and attend fittings, dress rehearsals, and strikes.
Maintain and organize in-house costume stock.
Coordinate costume loans for internal classroom and student productions when time permits.
Coordinate costume rentals for external (community and high school) productions if and when time and personnel permit.
Work with D&P Dept. Chair to manage shop supplies and equipment, working within a budget provided by the department chair.
Requirements
Required Training and Experience:
Experience teaching high school or working with children ages 13-18+
College degree in visual arts/design/performing arts
Expertise and experience in professional design field specific to costuming
Preferred:
Master’s degree in design field
Teaching experience/licensure in arts education
Leadership experience in an arts organization
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.
